Sound Tigers Blanked In Binghamton 4-0
April 7, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, were shutout 4-0 on the road by the Binghamton Senators Friday. The loss cut the Sound Tigers' lead on Binghamton in the race for the fourth-and-final playoff spot in the East Division to seven points, although the Sound Tigers still have a magic number of four points gained by them or lost by the Senators to earn a postseason berth.
Binghamton opened the scoring with a pair of first-period goals. First, Grant Potulny notched his 22nd of the season, and second in as many games against the Sound Tigers, off assists from Jeff Heerema and Charlie Stephens at 7:09. Then, Bobby Robins upped the lead to 2-0 Senators with his third of the season off helpers from Joe Cullen and Gregg Johnson with 50.4 seconds left in the opening frame.
The line of Heerema, Stephens and Potulny struck again early in the second period as Stephens and Potulny set up Heerema who banked a shot from just below the goal line off the skates of a Sound Tigers defenseman in the slot and into the net for his 25th goal of the season to make it 3-0 Binghamton at the 1:19 mark.
The Sound Tigers pulled goaltender Wade Dubielewicz in favor of an extra attacker with just over two-and-a-half minutes left in the third period, but Cullen iced the win with an empty-net goal, his seventh tally of the year, off an assist from Johnson to make it 3-0.
Senators netminder Kelly Guard was the first star of the game with 23 saves for his fifth shutout of the season, Potulny was the second star and Robins was the third. Dubielewicz finished with 26 saves as Binghamton had a 30-23 shots on goal advantage. The Sound Tigers were 0 for 4 on the power play while the Senators were 0 for 2.
Prior to Friday's game, the Sound Tigers re-signed forward Doug Christiansen to a professional tryout contract.
The Sound Tigers will return to Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard to host the Hartford Wolf Pack tomorrow, Saturday, April 8th, at 7:05 p.m. in their final home game of the 2005-06 regular season. The Connecticut Post will giveaway Sound Tigers team photos, the Port Jefferson Ferry will present an auction of game-worn jerseys and there will be a Curtiss Ryan Honda shoot to win a Honda Ridgeline during Saturday's game.
The Sound Tigers will also visit the Portland Pirates this Sunday at 4:05 p.m. They will finish the regular season with a pair of road games versus the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins next Friday, April 14th at 7:05 p.m. and in Hartford next Saturday, April 15th at 7 p.m.
