Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have captured their first regular season division championship by defeating the Norfolk Admirals, 5-4, Friday night at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza. The win raised the Penguins' record to 48-18-5-5 on the season, good for 106 points.

The victory ensured the Penguins of a first place finish in the American Hockey League's East Division. They currently lead the Hershey Bears, who dropped a 5-4 overtime decision to the Philadelphia Phantoms on Friday night, by seven points in the divisional standings (42-20-5-10, 99 points). The Bears have only three games remaining in the regular season, meaning the highest point total they can finish with is 105.

The F.G. (Teddy) Oke Trophy, awarded to the AHL's East Division champion, is named after one of the early pioneers of the sport in the 20th century. Oke was owner of the Kitchener team in the Canadian Pro Hockey League, one of two leagues that joined to create the present-day AHL in 1936.

One of the oldest trophies in North American sports, the Teddy Oke Trophy was first presented 79 years ago to the London Panthers, champions of the CPHL in 1927. Through the years, it has gone to the winner of the old International League (1930-36), the AHL's Western Division winner (1937-52), the regular season champions of the one-division AHL (1953-61, 1977), and the winners of the Eastern Division (1962-73), Northern Division (1974-76, 1978-96) and New England Division (1997-2001).
