Abbotsford Heat News Release
Omaha, NE - The Iowa Stars seized the upper hand in the chase for the last playoff spot in the West Division, beating the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights 3-2 in overtime on Friday night at the Civic Auditorium. The Stars now lead the Knights by one point in the standing with six games to go.
Iowa grabbed the lead at 16:34 of the first period when Loui Eriksson took advantage of a turnover and beat Brent Krahn for his team-leading 26th goal of the year.
The Knights answered back just 1:18 later. Warren Peters drove down the right wing and threw the puck in front where Ajay Baines tapped home his eleventh goal of the season.
The Knights then took their first lead of the game when Carsen Germyn stole the puck off a face-off and wired a shot past Iowa goalie Mike Smith for his team-leading 23rd goal of the year. The Knights took a 2-1 lead into the dressing room.
Omaha held that lead until 44 seconds into the third period when Dan Jancevski redirected a shot past Krahn to make it 2-2.
The Knights had two great chances to win in overtime, but Peters hit the post and Justin Taylor missed another opportunity on a rolling puck.
That set the stage for Fahey's heroics. He kept the puck in at the right point and threw a wrist shot that floated past a screened Krahn to the top corner.
The win gave the Stars four wins in five trips to Omaha this year, the reverse of their record at home where the Knights won four times.
The Knights are now 34-27-3-10. They'll finish the home half of their regular season schedule on Saturday when they host the Peoria Rivermen at 7:00 p.m. Congressman Tom Osborne will be on hand to meet fans from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Saturday is also Nebraska Lottery Night. The first 1,000 fans age 19 and older will receive a free Nebraska Lottery scratch ticket. Anyone who brings a non-winning lottery ticket to the game can purchase a ticket for just $10.
The Knights will finish the four-in-five weekend at Peoria on Sunday.
Tickets for all home games are on sale at the Civic Auditorium box office, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., on Sunday from noon through game time and at all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets may be purchased by calling 422-1212 or at Ticketmaster.com.
