Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Albany River Rats 3-2 Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins got goals from Nate Thompson, Kris Versteeg and Pascal Pelletier. The P-Bruins are now 40-28-1-5 on the season, 86 points and in fourth place in the Atlantic Division.
After a scoreless opening period, the River Rats took a 1-0 lead at the 4:35 mark of the second period. Brad Ference took a shot from the right boards and it was deflected past P-Bruins goaltender Derek Gustafson by Jason Ryzner. Providence quickly answered back with a goal. Jeremy Reich set up a 2-on-1 breakaway for Thompson and Jason MacDonald. Thompson kept the puck and shot it past River Rats netminder Frank Doyle. Jay Leach had the second assist as the game went into the second intermission tied at one.
In the third period, the P-Bruins took their first lead of the game at the 7:20 mark. Pelletier worked the puck off to Versteeg who waited along the right post before backhanding it past Doyle for his first professional goal. Chris Dyment had the second assist. Albany tied the game at two at the 15:42 mark. Adrian Foster scored his first goal of the season, while Tuomas Pihlman and Dan McGillis had the assists. With time running out in regulation David Lundbohm fed Versteeg down the left wing to create a 2-on-1 opportunity with Pelletier open in front of the net. Versteeg got the puck to Pelletier and he backhanded it past Doyle to give the P-Bruins a 3-2 victory. With the win, and a Manchester Monarchs loss, the P-Bruins pulled within a point of the third place. The P-Bruins have two games in hand and one head-to-head match-up remaining against the Monarchs.
Gustafson stopped 27 of 29 shots for the P-Bruins, while Doyle stopped 17 of 20 shots for the River Rats. The P-Bruins went 0 for 1 on the power play, while Albany did not have a power play opportunity.
The P-Bruins hit the road Saturday, April 8 versus the Springfield Falcons at the MassMutual Center at 7:05 p.m. and wrap up the weekend at home at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Sunday, April 9 versus the Falcons at 4:05 p.m. Tickets are available online at providencebruins.com, at the Dunkin' Donuts Center box office and at all TicketMaster outlets.
