Clinton, IA - A six-inning, 11-strikeout performance by Kane County right-hander Murphy Smith paved the way for a 7-3 Cougars' win over the Clinton LumberKings at Alliant Energy Field. Conner Crumbliss went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Anthony Aliotti went 2-for-4 with three RBI to back Smith (W, 3-0) with early offense.

The LumberKings immediately found themselves in a 4-0 hole as left-hander Jon Hesketh allowed two runs in the first and second innings. Aliotti lifted a sacrifice fly to left, sending Crumbliss home for the game's first run and Rashun Dixon added a first-inning RBI double to left-center. Crumbliss singled home another run in the second and scored on an error.

Hesketh (L, 3-5) was chased after just 3.2 innings, having yielded six runs - four earned - on nine hits. Aliotti singled home another run off him in the fourth to end his night early.

Matt Cerione did his best to keep the game close, lifting an RBI sacrifice fly to score James Jones in the fifth and driving home Gabriel Noriega with a double in the seventh. Noriega added a sacrifice fly as well in the fifth.

After Smith's exit, right-handers Jose Pina and Bo Schultz combined for an unearned run on two hits over the final 3.0 innings.

The LumberKings (2-2, 39-34) continue the series tomorrow night with Kane County (2-2, 34-39), first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM. Right-hander Taylor Stanton (6-4, 3.77) will make his 12th start, 15th appearance of the season. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
