South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - Alberto Diaz' RBI single in the second inning held up throughout the rest of the game as the South Bend Silver Hawks defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 1-0 in front of a season-high 5,968 fans Monday night at Coveleski Stadium. The shut out was the Silver Hawks' fifth of the season and the team's first 1-0 victory.

Diogenes Rosario, Brian Budrow, Bradin Hagens, and Yonata Ortega combined to shut out the Whitecaps. Rosario (WP, 4-2) started the game and tossed 5.0 scoreless innings while striking out three and walking four. Rosario walked the bases loaded in the first but got out of the jam by inducing a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Robert Brantly. Second baseman David Nick also caught Michael Rockett attempting to steal home in the fourth to preserve the shut out.

Budrow (ND) allowed four hits in his two innings of work but struck out two and stranded four Whitecaps. Hagens (ND) allowed just one walk in his scoreless eighth, while Ortega (SV, 15) pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 15th save. All in all, the Whitecaps stranded 11 runners throughout the game and have been shut out in three consecutive games.

South Bend scored the game's lone tally in the second. Ramon Castillo singled with one out and advanced to third on two wild pitches by West Michigan starter Nathan Newman (LP, 0-3). Diaz drove home Castillo with a bloop single over a drawn in infield to put South Bend up 1-0 for good.

Castillo's single increased his hit streak to five, as the first baseman has recorded a hit in every game he's played with South Bend. The Silver Hawks only recorded five hits, all of which were singles, compared to West Michigan's nine.

The Silver Hawks continue the three-game series against the Whitecaps tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 PM. South Bend will send RHP Eric Smith (5-3, 2.74 ERA) to the hill while West Michigan counters with LHP Jade Todd (0-8, 5.14 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 12:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com .
