West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - The West Michigan Whitecaps were shut out for a third consecutive game with a 1-0 loss to the South Bend Silver Hawks on Monday night at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium.
West Michigan (0-4, 26-47) has gone 29 straight innings without scoring a run, outscored 16-1 in four straight losses to start the second half. The Whitecaps continued a trend of exceptional pitching, but South Bend (2-1, 32-39) scored the only run of the night on a bloop-single in the second.
Nathan Newman (0-3) and Zach Samuels combined on a five-hitter. Making his first start of the year, Newman tossed four strong innings and allowing one run on three hits while fanning four and walking one. Samuels was also impressive, retiring 12 of the 14 batters he faced and striking out four over four shutout innings of two-hit ball.
Over their last nine games the Whitecaps pitching staff has posted a 2.12 ERA, but the offense has scuffled to an average of just 1.2 runs per game.
On Monday, West Michigan could not take advantage of nine hits and five walks, stranding 11 runners - including nine in scoring position - and bouncing into a pair of double plays.
Meanwhile, the Silver Hawks scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the second.
Ramon Castillo reached base on a one-out single and advanced all the way third when Newman snapped off two consecutive wild pitches with Alberto Diaz at the plate. That forced the infield in with the runner at third and just one out. Newman jammed Diaz on the next offering, but Diaz managed to bloop it over the drawn-in infield for a run-scoring single to shallow center.
Diogenes Rosario (4-2) earned the win for South Bend, allowing five hits and walking four but throwing five scoreless innings.
The Whitecaps continue a six-game road trip at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 29, with game two of a three-game series in South Bend. LHP Jade Todd (0-8, 5.14) is scheduled to start for West Michigan against RHP Eric Smith (5-3, 2.74) of the Silver Hawks. The 'Caps will return to Fifth Third Ballpark next weekend with a Fourth of July celebration against Dayton that will feature an exhilarating fireworks presented by Farm Bureau Insurance. The Sunday, July 4, contest will also be a Helen DeVos Children's Hospital Family Day and the first 1,000 fans will receive t-shirts thanks to Bissell.
