EASTLAKE, OH - In a matchup of the top two first half Midwest League Eastern Division squads, the Great Lakes Loons batted around in the fourth inning, scoring four runs en route to a 5-1 win over the Lake County Captains.
While Lake County finished the first half of the season one game in front of the Loons for the first half regular season Eastern Division Championship, the Loons are now 9-5 in head-to-head matchups against the Captains.
In the fourth, Chili Buss led off the inning with a bunt single down the third base line, then advanced to third on a double by Angelo Songco just over the head of first baseman Jeremie Tice. Lake County starting pitcher Vidal Nuno struck out Blake Smith and Brian Cavazos-Galvez. But with J.T. Wise at the plate and two outs, Nuno delivered a wild pitch to score Buss on a ball that ricocheted back to Nuno. He then flipped wildly to the catcher Roberto Perez, allowing Songco to score on a throwing error.
Later in the inning, the Loons loaded the bases following singles by Wise and Rafael Ynoa and a walk to Chris Jacobs. Bryant Hernandez delivered a two-run single past shortstop Casey Frawley.
Wise tacked on an additional run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
Lake County's lone run came in the eighth on a solo home run by University of Michigan product Adam Abraham.
Allen Webster (7-5) racked up his seventh win of the season with five shutout innings. He has now allowed just two earned runs over 29 innings this season against the Captains. Jordan Roberts followed with three relief innings, allowing just one hit - the Abraham home run. J.B. Paxson struck out the side in the ninth with a hit batsman to end the game.
The Loons (45-27 overall, 2-1 second half) and Captains (47-26, 3-1) continue their three-game series Tuesday at Classic Park. Game time is 7pm ET. Right-hander Matt Magill (2-1, 3.40 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Loons against right-hander Trey Haley (4-2, 4.91). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and online at Loons.com.
The Great Lakes Loons are a fourth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
