Silvertips Earn Friday Night OT Win
March 28, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Everett Silvertips News Release
PORTLAND - Dustin Wolf set a new franchise goaltending record for longest shutout streak and Cole Fonstad's one-timer helped the Everett Silvertips finish the Portland Winterhawks for a 2-1 victory in sudden death overtime at Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Friday in WHL action.
The Silvertips improved to 4-0 for the first time in 10 years (2010-11) and earned their fifth consecutive victory over the Winterhawks. Dylan Anderson scored his first goal of the season while Wolf made 35 saves in the victory, outdueling Dante Giannuzzi's 34 stops.
UP NEXT: The Silvertips return home Sunday to host the Tri-City Americans in downtown Everett at 4:05 p.m. (KRKO / WHL Live). Viewing packages remain on sale at watch.chl.ca. Play-by-play "Voice of the Tips" Mike Benton and color analyst Justin Morrison will have pre-game coverage beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Both teams played through a scoreless first period as Wolf surpassed Carter Hart's previous shutout record with 7:58 left in the first period, and the Silvertips set the tone with efficient puck movement in the first ten minutes of the game. Anderson then blasted the Tips to a 1-0 lead when he took Cole Fonstad's feed at the right point and uncorked a 55-foot shot through traffic on Giannuzzi with 16:18 left in the second period.
The Winterhawks then tied the game on Simon Knak's shorthanded goal at 13:16, perfectly re-directing Jaydon Dureau's feed while cruising to the net. Wolf had to be sharp after that to keep the tie intact, turning away two high-grade looks from Seth Jarvis' line.
With the game evolving into both teams trading high grade chances for most of the third period, Wolf and Giannuzzi remained sharp to force the game into overtime. In the last minute of the period, the Tips caught Portland deep in their own zone and took off with a two-on-none opportunity, led by Olen Zellweger.
Giannuzzi made a remarkable glove side save on Zellweger's backhander, but Zellweger was able to recover the rebound behind the net. Zellweger then saucered a perfect centering pass to Fonstad, waiting in the slot, who responded from a pair of stopped breakaways earlier in the game with a one-timer past Giannuzzi with 42 seconds left to send the Silvertips sprawling loudly over the bench to celebrate the winner.
