March 28 Preview: Wheat Kings vs Broncos 5 PM
March 28, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Regina, Sask. - The Brandon Wheat Kings(5-2-1-0) face off for their second meeting against the Swift Current Broncos (2-5-1-0) this afternoon at 5 PM with both teams steadily improving since their first bout on on March 18th.
Last time they met
Nolan Ritchie's three point (2G-1A) outing and a short-handed marker in the third by 20-year old forward Reid Perepeluk helped lift the Wheat Kings past the Broncos 4-1. Ritchie's opening goal was followed 14 seconds later by a Lynden McCallum score that put the Wheat Kings in the lead for the rest of the game. The Broncos scored on a first period power-play to make it 2-1, until Perepeluk's short handed insurance goal in the third put the game to bed. Ritchie added the empty netter in the final minute.
Wheat Kings rolling
After losing to the Saskatoon Blades on March 22, the Wheat Kings have won two straight over the Moose Jaw Warriors and Winnipeg ICE. They return to the ice today after a two day break following their 4-3 win over the ICE on Thursday that put them in second place within the East Division. Nolan Ritchie still leads the charge with 11 points (4G-7A) and is the reigning WHL Player of the Week. The line combination of Ritchie and 20-year old forward Lynden McCallum (5G-3A-8PTS) has been lethal, a reunion of the two from when they played AAA U18 together in 2017-18.
Greig on the board
Ridly Greig's short handed winner on Thursday was his first goal of the season, a welcomed addition to the Wheat Kings' offence. Greig is a recent first round pick by the Ottawa Senators in last year's NHL Draft and it's no secret that the talented forward is one of the more dangerous snipers inside the East Division's #SubwayWHLHub this season. After serving a three game suspension for a hit in Brandon's season opener, the Wheat Kings are looking to the 18-year old to get comfortable and produce points at the rate he did in 2019-20 when he finished the season with 60 (26G-34A) in 56 games.
Chiasson blossoming
Jake Chiasson (5G-4A-9PTS) felt he could have finished 2019-20 with more to show on the scoresheet and he has already gotten to work on doing that in just 8 games this season. The second-year forward is riding a three game points streak (3G-3A) and has only been held off the scoresheet two games so far.
Young guns
Nate Danielson and Logen Hammett scored their first ever WHL goals against the Moose Jaw Warriors last Wednesday and Rylen Roersma followed suit the next night against the ICE. In a very irregular and unprecedented season in the WHL, all three rookies have played with poise and looked very comfortable so far. Danielson has played with a promising amount of patience and control while Roersma has been excellent so far on the penalty kill, a role that not every rookie would normally be trusted with so early in their career. Aside from his solid defensive responsibility, Hammett's first point showed that he's not afraid to step up into the play and contribute offensively when the time comes. These are just three of the eight promising young rookies who have skated for the Wheat Kings this season, players Wheat Kings fans can look forward to watching grow for years to come.
Swift Current Broncos
The Broncos are riding a trend of 2 wins in 3 games after a disappointing start to their season that began with 5-straight losses. They upset the ICE in commanding fashion on Friday with a 7-4 win, lost in overtime to the Saskatoon Blades on Wednesday and beat the Prince Albert Raiders 5-2 on Monday. They now sit fourth in the division.
Mathew Ward leads all Broncos in scoring with 9 assists followed by Michael Farren with 5 goals and 3 assists. Netminder Isaac Poulter continues to keep the Broncos in games, facing a Division-leading 39.1 shots per in his 6 starts this season.
The puck drops at 5 PM Manitoba time tonight and can be watched via the WHL Live streaming package at www.watch.chl.ca. Branden Crowe will be calling the game on Q Country 91.5 FM or 880 on the AM dial.
