Swift Current Broncos News Release

Regina, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos (2-6-1-0) had a strong opening 30 minutes against the Brandon Wheat Kings (6-2-1-0) Sunday afternoon, but then ran into penalty trouble, ultimately dropping a 5-2 game.

The game was scoreless through 20 minutes despite both teams having multiple chances on the power play. The shots were even at 11 after the opening period, but the Broncos would strike early in the second.

Off the rush, Aiden Bulych tried to swing the puck across the crease for Mathew Ward, but it went off the pad of Connor Ungar and was sitting in the crease. Michael Farren crashed the net and knocked in the loose puck for his sixth of the year just 27 seconds into the second period.

The Broncos then added to their lead six minutes later as Farren spotted Owen Williams coming down the slot off the bench and fed him the puck. Williams's shot tipped off a defender's stick and went over the blocker of Ungar to extend the lead to 2-0.

Less than a minute later the Wheat Kings cut into the lead when Markus Sekundiak found a loose puck in the slot off the rush and beat Isaac Poulter over the glove.

Swift Current then started running into penalty trouble and the Wheat Kings made them pay. Lynden McCallum and Riley Ginnell scored power-play goals 2:31 apart to put the Wheat Kings ahead 3-2 heading into the final frame.

Brandon added to their lead halfway through the third with Chad Nychuk beating Poulter over the blocker off the rush before the Broncos continued their penalty trouble, giving the Wheat Kings a lengthy five-on-three opportunity late.

While Brandon wouldn't score, it kept the Broncos in their own zone and unable to pressure. Ridly Greig added an empty-net goal to seal the win for the Wheat Kings.

The Broncos will look to put the loss behind them quickly as the are the road team against the Regina Pats (2-4-2-0).
