August 28, 2016 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Lexington Legends News Release
The Delmarva Shorebirds built a six-run lead, then held off a late Lexington rally to claim a 7-5 win over the Legends Sunday in Salisbury, Maryland.
Ryan Mountcastle had three hits, including a double and a home run, for Delmarva.
The Shorebirds scored two runs in the first inning. Cedric Mullins led off with a double, and after Ricardo Andujar walked, Mountcastle doubled home one run. Randolph Gassaway's sacrifice fly scored Andujar from third, and Delmarva led 2-0.
Gassaway led off the bottom of the third with a home run, but the Legends answered with a run in the top of the fourth. Xavier Fernandez led off with a single and moved to third on a double by Brandon Dulin. The runners held as Travis Maezes grounded out, but Marten Gasparini's single scored Fernandez, cutting the Shorebirds' lead to 3-1.
Mountcastle hit a solo homer with one out in the bottom of fifth. Gassaway followed with a single, and with two outs, Ademar Rifaela homered, giving Delmarva a 6-1 lead.
The Shorebirds added another run in the sixth on a walk to Drew Turbin and singles by Andujar and Mountcastle.
The Legends got one run back in the seventh when Roman Collins singled, moved to third on a double by D.J. Burt and scored on a wild pitch.
Chase Vallot's three-run homer with two outs in the ninth cut the lead to two at 7-5, but reliever Mike Burke retired Fernandez on a line drive to right field to end the game.
Delmarva starter Francisco Jimenez (8-9) worked the first six innings and got the win. Burke picked up his second save. Legends starter Nolan Watson (3-11) was the losing pitcher.
The Shorebirds swept the three-game series.
The Legends will return to Lexington for their final three home games of the season. They will play Augusta Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. A doubleheader is set for Wednesday, with the first of two seven-inning games scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
