Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
The Kannapolis Intimidators fell to the Columbia Fireflies, 8-6, in the 2016 regular season home finale at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. With the loss, Kannapolis (31-32 Second Half, 55-78) is officially eliminated from post-season contention.
With the game tied 6-6, Columbia's Dash Winningham doubled in a pair of runs in the top of the eighth for a two-run lead. Patrick Mazeika led off the inning with a double, and Eudor Garcia singled to put runners on the corners. Winningham, who entered the game in the sixth as an injury replacement for Luis Ortega, drove a Jack Charleston offering to deep left-center field for the 8-6 advantage.
Craig Missigman (3-4) spun 2.0 scoreless frames for the Fireflies to earn the win, and Jimmy Duff worked around trouble in the ninth for the save (6). Charleston (2-6) took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits in 3.0 innings of work. He struck out two and walked none.
Kannapolis jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings aided by a 4-run second, but the Fireflies bounced back with six runs in the sixth off reliever Ben Wright to take the lead. Mazeika even the game, 5-5, with a 3-run double before scoring the go-ahead run on a Joe Tuschak sacrifice-fly.
Trailing 6-5, Antonio Rodriguez tied the game for Kannapolis by leading off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run (5) .
The game lasted 3:42, the longest 9-inning game the Intimidators played this season.
Kannapolis hits the road for the final seven games of the 2016 regular season with three games in Lakewood followed by four in Delmarva. The team is off Monday to bus up to New Jersey. The Intimidators open a 3-game series against the BlueClaws on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. as RHP Jimmy Lambert (0-4, 5.25 ERA) takes the mound for Kannapolis against Lakewood's RHP Harold Arauz (4-6, 3.45 ERA).
