Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory, NC - The Hickory Crawdads appeared ready for a back-and-forth matchup against the visiting Charleston RiverDogs Saturday night as both teams came out with two runs in the first inning, but the 'Dads bats dried up after the hot start allowing the 'Dogs to pull away late in an 11-2 loss at L.P. Frans Stadium.
The RiverDogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the top of the first, only to see the Crawdads come right back and answer with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to force a 2-2 tie. The two teams split on different paths from there however, as the 'Dads were held hitless over the final eight frames while the 'Dogs scored single runs in the fourth, seventh, and eighth innings prior to a 6-run ninth for the final 11-2 score.
Charleston quickly got to Hickory starting pitcher Emerson Martinez for two runs, one earned, on three hits in the top of the first to take their 2-0 advantage. The Crawdads rally in the home half began with back-to-back one out singles by Frandy De La Rosa and Ti'Quan Forbes, followed by a 2-out, 2-RBI single to right from Yeyson Yrizarri off of RiverDogs starter Nick Green that tied the contest at 2-2.
Both Martinez and Green settled down after the rocky first and put up scoreless frames in the second and third. The 'Dogs got back on the board in the top of the fourth though, with an RBI single by Gosuke Katoh putting the visiting team ahead 3-2. Charleston stretched their lead to three with single runs in the seventh and eight innings, as Jhalan Jackson singled and eventually scored on a throwing error by De La Rosa in the seventh before Jackson came through again with a solo home run to left in the eight to put the RiverDogs on top 5-2.
Charleston then put the game away against 'Dads reliever Omarlin Lopez in the top of the ninth, with the 'Dogs scoring six runs, all unearned, on four hits, two walks, and an error by Crawdads third baseman Brallan Perez for the final 11-2 score.
Martinez (0-5) took the loss for Hickory after allowing three runs, two earned, on nine hits, three walks, and six strikeouts over his 5.1 innings pitched. Green (3-0) earned the win for Charleston with two runs given up, one earned, on three hits, two walks, and four strikeouts over five innings pitched.
Yrizarri finished the night 1-3 with 2 RBI and a hit-by-pitch to lead the 'Dads bats, while both De La Rosa and Forbes went 1-4 with a run scored.
The Crawdads (32-30/ 70-61) and RiverDogs (29-33/71-60) will play the deciding rubber match of their 3-game series Sunday evening, with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 pm.
