Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

Damek Tomscha delivered an RBI single in the top of the 13th inning to give the BlueClaws a 4-3 win over West Virginia on Sunday, lowering their magic number to five.

Lakewood (39-24/68-64) took of three in the series from West Virginia (32-31/67-65). Coupled with Hagerstown's win against Greensboro, the BlueClaws remain three games up, but now there are just seven left and their magic number is down to five.

Tomscha finished 3-5 with three RBIs in the win, driving in two in the first and one in the 13th for the victory. The game tied the longest game by the BlueClaws this year; they played a 13-inning game at Delmarva, losing 6-1 on May 22nd.

Ismael Cabrera (2-1) earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief and Scott Harris earned his second professional save, first with the BlueClaws. Harris put two on with nobody out in the 13th but escaped trouble, getting Daniel Arribas, who had a walk-off single on Saturday, to pop out to first base to end the game. West Virginia's Seth McGarry (4-3) took the loss, allowing one run in the 13th after Seth Amedee had thrown three scoreless innings.

West Virginia tied the game with a run in the ninth off Blake Quinn. The run scored on a SAC fly by shortstop Stephen Alemais and forced the 10th, but came after the Power had runners at second and third and nobody out off Quinn, who was able to avoid further damage and force extra innings.

The BlueClaws jumped out to a quick 3-0 first inning lead. The first two batters, Mark Laird and Cornelius Randolph, singled and then Jose Pujols was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Damek Tomscha. Tomscha delivered a two-run double and two batters later, Deivi Grullon's SAC fly put the BlueClaws up 3-0.

West Virginia got on the board on a Casey Hughston SAC fly in the third inning and added a run on Logan Hill's ninth home run of the year in the fourth to slice Lakewood's lead to 3-2.

In the fifth, the Power had two on with one out, but Jose Taveras got a pair of strikeouts to escape trouble.

Taveras gave up two runs over seven innings. It was the eighth time this year he's thrown at least seven innings in a game, most on the team. He gave up six hits and struck out four. He leads the league with 144 strikeouts on the season.

Mark Laird went 1-5 but extended his hitting streak to 11 games, over which he is now 18-44. Cornelius Randolph also had two hits for the BlueClaws, his fifth multi-hit game in the last six games.

Power starter Gage Hinsz gave up three runs over seven innings and did not factor in the decision.
