Shootout woes continue for Chops in 3-2 loss to Monsters

February 16, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Chops News Release

The good news... if the Iowa Chops make the playoffs, there are no shootouts. The bad news... shootout losses for the Chops are costing them valuable points in the standings. Monday night was no exception against Lake Erie, as the Chops came from behind to tie the game late at 2-2, but fell in the shootout 3-2 to remain in 5th place in the West Division standings.

The Chops started the game playing patient, smart hockey, but the Lake Erie Monsters were able to hold them scoreless in the first period. The first 20 minutes flew by, with little stoppage in action and some great saves from Chops starting goaltender JP Levasseur. After two Monsters goals to start the 2nd period, the Chops have managed to score on the power play, courtesy of T.J. Trevelyan, and have been able to keep the Monsters' power play unit at bay, going scoreless on two occasions into the third period. The Chops managed to hold the Monsters scoreless in all 3 power play opportunities in regulation, and that gave way for the Chops to play with more confidence.

T.J. Trevelyan managed to tie the game in spectacular fashion, taking a rebound off of Stu Bickel's shot and tipping it over a diving Jason Bacashihua. For Bickel, who was playing in his first game since suffering an injury in mid-November, it was his first professional point. The Chops rode the tie into a heated overtime filled with scoring chances, including a near goal by Trevelyan that would have given him a hat trick, and eventually into the shootout. Both the Chops and Monsters entered the showdown without a shootout win this season with both teams going 0 for 5. The Monsters Phillipe Dupuis found the back of the net on the first shot, with a lofty backhander, and Matt Beleskey was able to tie the first shootout round with an identical backhanded goal. Unfortunately, the Chops were stopped on all other instances by goaltender Jason Bacashihua, and the Monsters' Matt Hendricks was able to score the winning shootout goal.
