THIS WEEK'S GAMES
After bypassing both the Iowa Chops and Chicago Wolves over the weekend, the Houston Aeros will try to extend their four-game win streak with a pair of contests against the Chops this Thursday and Saturday at Toyota Center. Houston's win streak includes two games against Chicago and a pair in Iowa this past weekend. The six-point weekend put Houston (26-21-1-8) into sole possession of third place in the West Division heading into the week, four points ahead of Iowa and one behind the Rockford IceHogs.
Houston boasts a 3-1 record against the first-year Chops with the only loss coming in Iowa. Each of the four games have been decided by only one or two goals but the four contests have all been decided in regulation. Four games remain between the two clubs, including Thursday's 7:05 p.m. Happy Hour game and Saturday's 7:35 p.m. Faith Night, with one contest remaining in Des Moines.
Through four games against the Chops, Houston has netted 10 power-play goals on 22 chances for a 45.5% conversion rate. This past Saturday the Aeros went 4-for-4 on the man advantage, the most power-play goals the Aeros have scored in a single game this season. Houston has averaged 4.25 goals per game and allowed 3.25 through the first four contests.
WEEK IN REVIEW
After spending the week practicing at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, the Wild's home ice, the Houston Aeros came out with three straight wins against divisional opponents, Iowa in back-to-back games and Chicago on Sunday. Houston is now 17-7-1-3 against West Division opponents, a win percentage of .679 compared to last season's final record of 26-24-1-3 against the West for a .519 win percentage.
Jesse Schultz recorded a goal in each of the games this past weekend helping the Aeros extend their winning streak and his goal-scoring streak to four games. Both streaks began in Chicago on Sunday, February 8 when Schultz tallied two goals. His four-game goal scoring streak also tied a career high which he initially set in November of 2005 when he played for Manitoba.
The Iowa Chops took a 2-1 lead late in the first period but allowed the Houston Aeros three goals in less than five minutes late in the third to fall 4-2 Friday night in Wells Fargo Arena. Aeros' netminder Nolan Schaefer stopped 25 shots for his 16th win of the season. The victory put Houston into a three-way tie with Iowa and Chicago for third place in the West Division.
Matt Beaudoin recorded his first AHL hat trick in the Aeros' 7-6 victory over Iowa Saturday night. The win moved Houston into a tie for third place in the division with Chicago before their Sunday meeting.
The Houston Aeros won their fourth straight game 4-2 over the Chicago Wolves Sunday night. The win put the Aeros alone in third place in the division and the win streak is tied for Houston's longest such streak of the season. Four different Aeros scored goals and Barry Brust stopped 30 of 32 shots for his ninth win of the season.
