Sharks Sink IceCaps 3-2 in Shootout

ST. JOHN'S, NL - Despite forcing overtime for the second game in as many nights, the St. John's IceCaps fell to the Worcester Sharks 3-2 in a shootout Friday night at Mile One Centre.

Harri Sateri stood tall for the Sharks, turning aside 27 of 29 shots in regulation before stopping 7-of-9 shootout attempts to earn the win. Sena Acolatse scored the game-winner in the shootout, while Matt Tennyson and Freddie Hamilton had the tallies during regulation for the Sharks.

For the IceCaps, Jason Jaffray and Jerome Samson had the goals, while Eddie Pasquale made 21 saves - along with another six in the shootout - in a losing effort. Eric O'Dell and John Albert both scored in the shootout.

After a scoreless first period, Tennyson broke the stalemate 10:55 into the second frame to make it 1-0 for the Sharks. Two seconds after the Sharks' 5-on-3 man advantage expired, Tennyson took a feed from Adam Comrie and wired a wrister through traffic from the high slot that fooled Pasquale to the blocker side.

Worcester's lead didn't last for long, however, as Jaffray evened the score at a goal apiece just over a minute later. With the IceCaps on the man-advantage, Jaffray took a heads-up pass from Brenden Kichton on the rush into the Sharks zone before wiring one over the glove of Sateri.

In the third period, Hamilton put the Sharks ahead 2-1 at 7:16. After two outstanding saves by Pasquale, Brodie Reid picked up the puck in the corner and dished it to Hamilton who made no mistake in sneaking one stick side on Pasquale.

Wasting no time in tying things up again, Samson - notching his second game-tying, third-period goal in as many nights - made it 2-2 at 9:50 to carry the IceCaps to overtime. After Andrew Gordon broke free along the boards, he slid a cross-ice feed to Samson who wristed it through Sateri.

With neither squad able to seal the deal in overtime, it took nine attempts per team in the shootout for the Sharks to earn the victory. Dashing in towards Pasquale full speed before pulling to his backhand and then drawing to the forehand, Acolatse wristed the game-winner into the bottom corner to give the Sharks the win.

The IceCaps and Sharks close out their three-game series at Mile One Centre Saturday night, when St. John's looks for the win to take five of a possible six points from Worcester.
