50 Shots Not Enough in Binghamton

The Adirondack Phantoms peppered away with a season-high 50 shot effort at Binghamton goaltender Nathan Lawson but it ultimately was not enough in a Friday night 4-2 loss at the Senators. Adirondack out-shot the B-Sens 50-23 in the wild and fast-paced game. Lawson made 48 saves including 21 in the third period to essentially steal the win from a Phantoms team who mostly dominated play in each of the three periods.

It was the second highest shot-total in the American Hockey League this season bested only by San Antonio's 56 shots earlier this year. It was also the most shots in a game for Adirondack since a 52-shot effort, also at Binghamton, two seasons ago on February 24, 2012.

Petr Straka (3rd) and Kyle Flanagan (2nd) scored for the Phantoms who fell to the hands of the Senators for the first time in three tries this year.

The Senators and Phantoms scored a minute-and-a-half apart about midway through the second period for a 1-1 tie after two. Andre Petersson beat Cal Heeter top-shelf on the short-side with a blast from the left-wing to give Binghamton the initial lead.

But Rob Bordson found the puck behind the goal and dished to Petr Straka in front on the left side of the crease to chip a shot through Lawson quickly knotting the score again. For the rookie Straka, it was his third goal of the season.

Then the third period got rolling with the play and pace getting wilder by the minute. After alternating penalties back-and-forth between the two teams, Adirondack and Binghamton would eventually have some rare 3-on-3 time. It was the first 3-on-3 hockey in a Phantoms' game this year.

Kyle Flanagan's second goal of the season came early in the third period to give Adirondack their only lead of the night at 2-1. His wrister from the right wall snuck through short-side on a screened Lawson who did not appear to see the puck at all. Both of Flanagan's goals this season have come at Binghamton.

But Adirondack's extended penalty-kill streak of 28 in a row would come to an end a couple minutes later on a big one-timer from the left-circle by Stephane Da Costa. The reigning AHL Player of the Week notched his third of the year on a dish across by Cody Ceci. It was the first power play goal surrendered by the Phantoms since their last game in Binghamton on October 26.

A couple minutes later at 4-on-4, a deflection by Jean-Gabriel Pageau on a big slapper by Tyler Eckford gave Binghamton the lead again at 3-2.

Kris Newbury had a big one-timer with just under a minute remaining that Lawson denied. And the Phantoms had a couple other opportunities on top of Lawson in the closing minutes as well. But the former New York Islanders goalie stood strong to pick up his seventh win of the year. And Mark Stone sealed the win with an empty-netter in the final seconds.

Binghamton with their fifth straight victory improved to 10-4-0. The Phantoms fell to 7-6-2.

Adirondack was 0-for-7 on the power play while Binghamton was 1-for-7. But both teams had several shortened power plays of only 20 seconds or so due to the alternating penalties back-and-forth.

Adirondack has a rare Saturday night off this week. The team does not play again until next Friday when they return for back-back games at the Glens Falls Civic Center next weekend. Adirondack now has seven of their next eight games at home in a hectic and busy 16-day stretch from November 22 through December 7.

That stretch begins next Friday with a rematch against the very same Binghamton squad.

Adirondack is currently in their longest stretch between home games, 20 days, before entering their busiest slate of home games on the other side. Friday, November 22 is Scoville Diamond Dig Night and November 23 on Youth Jersey Night presented by Glens Falls Hospital.
