BURLINGTON, IA - Chevy Clarke's go-ahead, three-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning put the Burlington Bees in front and they went on to a 3-1 triumph over the Beloit Snappers on Monday night in Midwest League action at Community Field.
Beloit loses the series finale after taking the first two games and their record is now 67-53 (24-25 in the second half). Burlington salvages the final contest to jump to 46-69 (20-30 in the second half).
For five innings, this game was a showdown between starting pitchers Deyvi Jimenez, who pitched for the Snappers, and Chris O'Grady, who was on the hill for the Bees. While both teams threatened at different points in those innings, each starter was able to wiggle out of trouble on several occasions.
In the sixth inning, however, both pitchers faltered. In the top half, Beloit loaded the bases on a single and two walks and wild pitch by Austin Adams allowed Renato Nunez (2-4, run) to race home with the night's first run. That lead would only last until the bottom half, when the Bees figured out Jimenez (2-4). A single, a walk and another single by the inning's first three hitters put three ducks on the pond. Jimenez proceeded to retire the next two hitters without a run scoring, but that's when Clarke (2-4, 3 RBIs) stepped up to the plate and cleared the bases.
Now with a lead to protect, Adams (1-1) remained in the game and retired the side in order in the seventh. Reliever Joey Krehbiel was brought in for the eighth innings and worked around a two-out double to maintain the two run edge. Cam Bedrosian pitched the ninth and retired the side in order for his seventh save.
The Snappers will take Tuesday off and then head to Cedar Rapids to begin a three-game set with the Kernels. RHP Derek DeYoung (5-5, 4.30 ERA) is game one's scheduled starter for Beloit, while Cedar Rapids' pitcher is TBD.
