Dragons Lose 8-5, Remain 2 Games out of Wildcard Spot

Fort Wayne, Ind.-The Fort Wayne TinCaps built a 6-0 lead and held off the Dayton Dragons to win 8-5 on Monday night. The TinCaps took two-of-three in the series and dropped the Dragons to 27-24 in the second half.

The Dragons remained two games behind Bowling Green, who also lost on Monday, in the race for the East Division wildcard spot. They are four and one-half games behind first place Great Lakes.

The Dragons battled back from a six-run deficit and pulled to within three runs in the sixth inning. They had chances in the seventh, eighth, and ninth but stranded eight runners over those three innings. The Dragons stranded a season-high 15 on the night.

Fort Wayne scored single runs in the second and third innings, then added four more in the fourth to lead 6-0. The Dragons answered with run-scoring singles from Sammy Diaz and Jesse Winker in the top of the fifth, but Fort Wayne scored two more in the bottom of the inning to lead 8-2.

Brandon Dailey delivered a two-run triple for the Dragons in the sixth and Diaz knocked him in with a two-out single to make it 8-5.

The Dragons loaded the bases with one out in the seventh but came away empty. They left runners at second and third in the eighth. In the ninth, Jeff Gelalich drew a walk to start the inning and Daniel Pigott singled. With two outs, Beau Amaral reached on an error to load the bases, but Diaz grounded back to the pitcher to end the game.

Dragons starting pitcher Sal Romano (6-9) worked three and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on 10 hits with one walk and three strikeouts to suffer the loss.

The Dragons finished with 12 hits. Diaz and Pigott each had three. Seth Mejias-Brean had two doubles and two walks. Amaral also had two hits and three stolen bases.

The Dragons do not play on Tuesday. They open a big three-game series with the Great Lakes Loons on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Ismael Guillon (4-7, 5.64) will start for Dayton against Great Lakes' Tom Windle (4-0, 1.96).
