Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - An 0-53 record when trailing after eight innings was broken by the Kane County Cougars on Monday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark when they scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 4-3.
Jeimer Candelario sparked the Cougars (48-67, 18-31) in the bottom of the ninth as he sliced a double into the left-field corner against Madison Boer (1-1). After Carlos Escobar popped out, Rock Shoulders blooped a base hit to right, scoring Candelario to tie the game at 3-3. Boer walked the next two batters, one intentionally to load the bags for Reggie Golden, who came through with a sac fly to center, scoring pinch-runner Jose Dore with the winning tally.
Cedar Rapids (72-46, 32-18) scored the first run of the ballgame in the top of the first with Jonathan Murphy walking and scoring on a sacrifice fly from Adam Brett Walker. Kernels starter Josue Montanez didn't allow a hit until the fourth, but the Cougars broke through in that frame with two runs on three singles.
Giuseppe Papaccio reached with a one-out base hit. Dan Vogelbach singled Papaccio into scoring position while Candelario's single knocked home Papaccio to tie the game at 1-1. Escobar cracked a sac fly to center to draw Vogelbach to the dish, putting the Cougars on top.
Michael Heesch was sharp over five frames for the Cougars as he allowed just two hits before giving way to Al Yevoli. Cedar Rapids touched Yevoli up for a pair in the top of the sixth to reclaim the lead. Joel Licon singled and scored on a Max Kepler base hit. Jorge Polanco doubled and came home on a wild pitch. Yevoli came back with a scoreless seventh before Andrew McKirahan (2-0) worked two shutout innings.
The Cougars hit the road on Wednesday night to begin a three-game series against the Burlington Bees at Community Field with a 6:30 first pitch. Right-hander Starling Peralta (2-0) will start for the Cougars against fellow righty Pat Lowery (4-7). The Cougars are back home on Saturday, August 17, to take on the Clinton LumberKings at 6:30 p.m. For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
