SeaWolves Feast on Baysox

July 7, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release

ERIE, Pa. -- The Bowie Baysox were trounced by the Erie SeaWolves Wednesday night at Jerry Uht Park, losing 12-3 as six SeaWolves batters had multi-hit games. Most of the damage was done against Baysox starter Nate Nery, who was hit 11 times in 3.2 innings for 11 runs, nine earned.

Nery has struggled to adapt to Double-A hitters since his promotion in late June, giving up 43 hits and 22 earned runs through 19.1 innings of work in four starts.

The Baysox have now dropped three games in a row to Erie after sweeping the SeaWolves in four games the previous week.

Erie outfielder Andy Dirks led off the bottom of the first and reached first on a fielding error by second baseman Ryan Adams and reached third on Cale Iorg's double. Right fielder Kody Kaiser was thrown out on a ground ball to third base that plated Dirks for a 1-0 lead. Iorg scored from second to make it 2-0 after designated hitter Michael Bertram singled to right field.

The SeaWolves tacked on three more runs in the second inning, as catcherAndy Bouchie led off with a double and was joined on base by Shawn Roof, who was hit by a pitch. Dirks hit a single to right that plated Bouchie and moved Roof to second base. Iorg grounded to shortstop to what could've been a double play, as shortstop Greg Miclat tossed the ball to Adams, forcing Dirks out as second before Adams threw the ball outside of first baseman Robbie Widlansky's reach as Roof ran across the plate. Iorg moved to second base on a groundout by Kody Kaiser and scored when Bertram singled to right to put the Baysox down 5-0.

The Baysox threatened to make the game competitive in the top of the fourth inning when center fielder Danny Figueroa and Adams hit back-to-back singles before Tyler Henson hit his ninth home run of the year, a three-run bomb to right field. That home run kept Henson tied for the Eastern League in hits, and trimmed the deficit back to 5-3.

Momentum from Henson's homer was quickly quashed as Dirks reached safely again with a double to left field and scored on Kaiser's triple to right field. Kaiser came across the plate when first baseman Rawley Bishop smacked the first pitch he saw over the left field wall. After Bertram hit a harmless fly ball to Widlansky in foul territory, third baseman Bryan Pounds made the game 9-3.

Outfielder Deik Scram drew a walk to continue the rally, and scored when Bouchie doubled to center field and moved on to third base on center fielder Danny Figueroa's fielding error. Nery left the mound to lefty Pedro Viola, but the damage had already been done, as Roof doubled to center field to plate Bouchie. Roof came around to complete the rally, scoring on Iorg's single to left, putting the Baysox behind 12-3.

From there, the game went into a lockdown as the bullpens took over, each giving up just two hits the rest of the way. Baysox saves leader Pedro Beato came on in the bottom of the eighth and pitched a perfect inning, striking out the SeaWolves in order.

The Baysox drop to 45-41 with the loss, but hold steady in second place, 8.5 games behind Altoona and 2.5 ahead of third-place Akron.

After one more game in Erie, Thursday at 7:05 p.m., the Baysox return home Friday, July 9, for a four game set with the New York Yankees' Double-A affiliate, the Trenton Thunder. That series features fireworks and a comedy and magic show for kids by The Great Zucchini on Saturday, July 10, and Superhero Night on Sunday, July 11, with kids' favorite superheroes in costume for a meet-and-greet and autographs.
