Shawn Bowman Homers Again, But Fisher Cats Fall in Portland

Portland, ME-Shawn Bowman homered for the second consecutive night and added a double but the Fisher Cats fell to the Sea Dogs 11-4 at Hadlock Field on Wednesday night.

Nate Spears went 4-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBI for Portland as the Sea Dogs snapped a four game losing streak. Alex Wilson (1-2) earned his first win in his fifth career Double-A start, allowing one earned run in six innings, retiring the final 11 batters he faced in a strong effort.

Bowman gave the Fisher Cats (51-35) a 1-0 lead, smacking an 0-1 fastball off the video board in left center field for his team-leading 15th home run of the season.

Portland (42-43) answered with a long ball in the bottom of the second inning. Sea Dog 3B Ray Chang homered to tie the game at 1-1.

The Sea Dogs struck again in the bottom of the third inning. Spears led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a single by Yamaico Navarro. After Luis Exposito reached on a fielders choice and error, Anthony Rizzo singled Navarro home put Portland up 3-1. Chih-Hsien Chiang's double plated Exposito to make it 4-1.

Portland added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Spears hit a ground rule double with two outs and scored on a base hit by Navarro for a 5-1 lead.

Randy Boone (2-4) suffered the loss, working four innings in his second start off the disabled list, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits. He walked two, struck out three and threw a franchise-record four wild pitches.

New Hampshire cut the Sea Dogs deficit to 5-3 against reliever Santo Luis in the top of the seventh inning. Eric Thames singled, Bowman doubled and Adam Loewen was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. David Cooper walked and Jonathan Diaz added a sacrifice fly to drive in the Fisher Cat runs.

But Portland's Matt Sheely drilled a three-run triple in the bottom of the seventh inning, part of a four run frame against reliever Clint Everts and Spears hit a two-run homer off Ron Uviedo in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Sea Dogs pulled away.

The series concludes on Thursday night with New Hampshire right-hander Rey Gonzalez (0-0, 7.20) making the start against Portland righty Jeremy Kehrt (1-5, 3.98) in a 7:00pm game. Fisher Cats Pre-Game gets underway at 6:45pm with Bob Lipman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.
