Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
HARRISBURG, PA - The Harrisburg Senators used a trio of hurlers to shut out the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 4-0, in front of 1,860 at Metro Bank Park on Wednesday night.
Harrisburg cracked the scoreboard first, plating an unearned run off of Squirrels' right-hander Craig Westcott in the third inning. Starting pitcher Andrew Kown led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a single from Marvin Lowrance two batters later. Westcott walked Chris Marrero to load the bases with two outs and got a ground ball to third base from Jesus Valdez that should have ended the inning. Brad Boyer's throw to first was wide of the bag however, and Kown came in to give Harrisburg a 1-0 lead.
That lead expanded in the fifth when Westcott walked Brad Coon to lead off the frame. He got the first two outs in the inning, but Valdez lined a two-run homer into the left-field bleachers for a 3-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Kown was in control. He faced just one over the minimum through his first six innings, shutting out the Squirrels on one hit. He retired 10 consecutive batters from the first to the fifth inning, only having that string ended on an error on Michael Martinez.
Kown (3-4) retired after the sixth inning to his third victory of the season. He allowed just a lone hit, walked none and struck out four.
Westcott (0-1) departed after the fifth inning. He was charged with three runs -- two earned -- on six hits. He lost for the first time as a professional in his 22nd professional start.
Right-hander Cole Kimball worked two scoreless innings behind Kown and Zech Zinicola closed out the ballgame with a scoreless ninth. The Squirrels were shut out for the sixth time this season.
Tim Pahuta capped the scoring with a solo-home run off of Richmond reliever Mitch Lively in the eighth inning.
The finale of the four-game series is scheduled for 7:00 PM on Thursday at Metro Bank Park. RHP Michael Main (0-1, 0.00) will make the start for Richmond against LHP Aaron Thompson (4-10, 5.79) for Harrisburg.
