That Sure Was a Bad Idea...

July 7, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release

CURVE, Pa - Thankfully, the Altoona Curve franchise celebrated its inaugural year in 1999. During that season the franchise did not have endure zebra pants, mullets, New Kids on the Block, Milli Vanilli, Prohibition or George Lazenby as James Bond. However, over the last 12 years the franchise has existed, the Curve have been around to witness some of the worst ideas not only in the game of baseball, but pop-culture as well.

On Wednesday, July 7 at Blair County Ballpark, the Altoona Curve will host "Bad Idea Night" as part of their Wacky Wednesday series. Bad Idea Night will give a belly-busting salute to many bad ideas in the game of baseball and elsewhere (with some more recent than others) during their 7:00 p.m. game against the Binghamton Mets.

The Altoona Curve have plans on saluting these awful ideas on Wednesday:

* Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park in Chicago

* Nickel Beer Night at Cleveland Municipal Stadium

* White Sox wearing shorts in 1976

* Vasectomy Night - Charleston RiverDogs - 1998 - a promotion that got snipped after public backlash (Curve GM Rob Egan was the PR man for RiverDogs at the time. Nice effort, Egs.)

* Houston Astros and San Diego Padres uniforms of the 1980s

* Having Lady Gaga as a skybox guest

* Wool/flannel uniforms

* Mike Hargrove's pre-stance routine ("The Human Rain Delay")

* Mel Hall's batting gloves

* Don Zimmer charging Pedro Martinez

* Robin Ventura charging Nolan Ryan

* Rickey Henderson's "G.O.A.T." Speech ("Today, I'm the greatest of all time!")

* "The Bronx is Burning" series on ESPN

* Derek Bell declaring "Operation Shutdown"

* A fan looking for a concession stand on the warning track (too soon?)

* Calling George Brett out due to pine tar

* Phil Niekro carrying an Emery board while on the mound

Oh, and how could we forget.... Astroturf. What did the Red Sox get return for Babe Ruth anyway??

On-field contests, video board creations, and front office staff apparel will also carry out the theme in a bad way. Fans should especially look for awful differences in the Great American Bagel Race, the nightly Mascot Skit, Finish That Tune, Beach Balls of Chaos, and the Jousting contest.

"I hope fans boo," said Altoona Curve Director of Promotions, Matt Hoover. "I hope they boo me, in particular."

Oh, they will, Hoov. Don't worry. They will.
