Portland Sea Dogs News Release

Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A of the Boston Red Sox, have reached the Eastern League Playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. Although the Sea Dogs lost 7-5 to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Sunday, a Binghamton Mets 9-6 loss to New Britain secured the Sea Dogs a playoff berth. For the fourth consecutive season the Sea Dogs will face the Trenton Thunder (Yankees) in the first round of the Eastern League playoffs. The Sea Dogs defeated the Thunder in 2005 and 2006 for Eastern League Northern Division title, while Trenton prevailed in 2007 on route to their first Eastern League Championship. The 2008 Eastern League Northern Division Championship is set to start on Wednesday, September 3rd in Trenton, New Jersey.

Brandon Magee (7-13) tossed seven strong innings on six hits and two runs, leading New Hampshire to a 5-2 win over Portland. Magee earned his 1st win over Portland, hurling seven strong innings on two runs and six hits.

Portland rallied in the 9th inning, scoring twice on Jorge Jimenez's 2-run double but Zach Daeges grounded out to end the game. Orlando Roman earned his 2nd save of the year, despite allowing the double to Jimenez.

Jimenez finished with 4 RBI and blasted a homer in the fourth inning.

The top two teams from each division qualify for post-season play. The Trenton Thunder (85-53) have secured first place in the Northern Division, while Portland (74-64) has captured the second spot. In the Southern Division the Bowie Baysox (83-57), Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, have secured first place and will face the Akron Aeros (79-61), Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, in the first round of the playoffs.

This is the seventh time in the 15-year history of the franchise that the Sea Dogs have advanced to the Eastern League playoffs. Portland has advanced to the Eastern League finals on four occasions, and won its first Eastern League title in 2006 by defeating the Akron Aeros.

The first round of the Eastern League playoffs is a best out of five series scheduled to get underway on Wednesday, September 3rd. Games one, two and five (if necessary) will be played in Trenton, New Jersey. While the Sea Dogs will host games three and four (if necessary). Games three and four are scheduled to be played at Hadlock Field on Friday, September 5th at 7:00 PM and Saturday, September 6th at 6:00 PM.

The two division series winners will square off in a best of five series for the Eastern League Championship Series. Should the Sea Dogs advance to the Championship series, Games one and two would be played at the home of the Southern Division winner. The Sea Dogs would host games three, four (if necessary), and five (if necessary) at Hadlock Field on Friday, September 12th, Saturday, September 13th, and Sunday, September 14th.
