Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves ended a two-game losing skid on Sunday night at Jerry Uht Park with a wild 9-7 win over the Akron Aeros.
The Aeros struck first against Erie starter Guillermo Moscoso in the top of the first inning. Bronson Sardinha tripled with one out and he scored on an error by Shawn Roof on a fly ball off the bat of Wes Hodges to shallow right to put the Aeros up 1-0.
The SeaWolves struck back in the bottom of the third inning against Akron reliever Chuck Lofgren. With two outs in the inning, Wilkin Ramirez, Ryan Roberson and Deik Scram all walked to load the bases. A wild pitch with Santo De Leon at the plate brought home Ramirez, tying the game 1-1 and moving Roberson and Scram into scoring position. De Leon singled home the runners to give Erie a 3-1 lead. Pedro Cotto came in and tripled to right-center, bringing home De Leon for a 4-1 lead.
The Aeros cut into the Erie lead in the top of the fourth. Hodges led off the inning with a double and with two outs, he came in to score on a home run by Carlos Santana, his first, to make it a 4-3 game.
Erie exploded right back in a big way in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, James Skelton singled bringing Casper Wells to the dish. Wells slammed his 17th home run of the season over the wall in left-center. The two-run blast gave the âWolves a 6-3 lead. Wells has collected a total of 27 home runs on the season between Erie and West Michigan. Ramirez walked for the second time in the game and got to second on a wild pitch. Roberson followed with a single setting two on base for Scram. Scram laced a triple to bring home Ramirez and Roberson for an 8-3 Erie lead. Still with only one out, Cotto connected on his second RBI triple of the night bringing home Scram for a 9-3 lead.
Akron got one back in the top of the sixth. Sardinha led off with a single and got to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Stephen Head singled home Sardinha to make it a 9-4 game.
What looked like a comfortable lead for the âWolves heading into the ninth inning quickly turned into a crazy last inning. Reliever Danny Zell retired Head for the first out. Ryan Goleski singled to right to put a man on base. Santana grounded into a fielder's choice with Goleski being retired at second for the second out. That's when things got interesting. Nathan Panther singled to center put a pair on base for Brandon Pinckney. Pinckney blooped an RBI single off the glove of Caonabo Cosme in shallow center, bringing home Santana, making it a 9-5 game. Brandon Chaves then grounded a ball under the glove of Cosme at second and on the error, Panther scored to cut the Eie lead down to three. Josh Rodriguez then grounded to Brandon Douglas at short but a late throw to second allowed Chaves to reach safely loading the bases for Sardina. Sardinha beat out an infield single to bring the score to 9-7. Rudy Darrow finally shut down the door as he came in to strike out Hodges to end the game. Darrow picked up his sixth save.
Moscoso (3-1) picked up the win for the SeaWolves going six innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts. The 10 strikeouts ties a season and career high. In 34.2 innings in six starts with Erie, Moscoso finished the season with 50 strikeouts and just eight walks.
