Connecticut Defenders News Release
TRENTON, NJ- After dropping two straight to Trenton, ironically by the same score the Defenders had enough. Connecticut pounded the Thunder 11-3 Sunday.
The Defenders struck early once again as Eliezer Alfonzo delivered a double over the head of Austin Jackson in center to plate Olmo Rosario who singled, Connecticut led 1-0.
Alfonzo struck again in the second but this time with a two run blast. Adam Witter followed with a solo shot of his own and gave Connecticut a 4-0 advantage.
Trenton finally delivered in the third with a two out rally. Jackson singled and Malec walked setting the stage for Colin Curtis to take one over the wall to pull the Thunder within a run at 4-3 Defenders. That would be all the Thunder would get.
Connecticut manufactured a run in fourth, but poured it on in with a five run fifth. Alfonzo walked, Witter singled, than Sosa slapped a double to left center to score Alfonzo. Martinez-Esteve drove in Witter with a base hit on the first pitch he saw. Mike Mooney delivered a sacrifice fly to score Sosa and Kyle Haines capped it off with a two run shot up the middle to score Martinez-Esteve and Maroul. Defenders took a comfortable 10-3 lead.
Dave Maroul finished up his 4-5 performance with his final double down the left field line to score Martinez-Esteve who led the ninth inning off with a double of his own, Defenders 11-3.
Dave McKae (8-9) picked up the win in his final start of the season as he went the minimum and gave up six hits, three earned runs while striking and walking three. Jason Jones (13-7) suffered the loss for Trenton lasting only four innings while rendering eleven hits, nine earned runs, walking two and striking out three.
Connecticut will wrap up their 2008 season with a 1:05pm Labor Day start tomorrow versus Trenton at Waterfront Park. Catch all the action of the final Defenders game of '08 on the Defenders Radio Network or at www.ctdefenders.com.
