Aerodynamics...

Lucky Sevens...The Aeros scored three times in the seventh inning without the benefit of a hit last night, taking the lead for good in a 7-5 triumph over Erie. Akron scored the final six runs in the game and erased what had been a four-run deficit at one point as the club won 40 road games for the second straight year. Walks to CF Nathan Panther and SS Brandon Chaves started the seventh for Akron, and Erie third baseman Santo de Leon then threw a sacrifice bunt from 2B Josh Rodriguez into right field as both runners scored to put the Aeros ahead for the first time since the second inning. Rodriguez would score later in the inning on a wild pitch, as Akron won for the fourth time in five games. It's the first time the Aeros have won four of five since July 10th-14th, the last five games before the All-Star break.

Made to be Broken...It had been a struggle ever since the All-Star break, but 3B Wes Hodges finally eclipsed the single-season franchise RBI record with a huge night yesterday. The native of Chattanooga doubled home a run in the first to get to 94 RBI, and then cracked a three-run homer in the fifth to move past Chan Perry for first place. Hodges now has 97 RBI for the year, one better than Perry's total of 96 set in 1997 (the first year the Aeros were in Akron). Hodges also tied Bowie's Lou Montanez for the league lead, meaning that one more would deny Montanez the Triple Crown. Montanez was called up to Baltimore at the beginning of the month, yet still has a shot to be the first Triple Crown winner in the Eastern League since Binghamton's Danny Thomas in 1976.

Dirty Dozen...1B Matt Whitney was unable to extend his career-high hitting streak last night, going 0-4 to end his run at 11 straight games. Whitney, who hit .400 over his streak and raised his average to .267 (his highest mark since May 3rd), looked to have a hit in the fourth, only to see Erie shortstop Brandon Douglas take it away up the middle.

Don't Forget...While much of the focus this season has been on Hodges and his assault on the RBI record or closer Randy Newsom and his record-setting performance at the back end of ballgames, 2B Josh Rodriguez has very quietly put together one of the finer all-around seasons in franchise history. The native of Houston, TX has played in 135 games this season, one behind Mike Edwards (2000) for fifth-most in single-season franchise history. Rodriguez also has 523 at-bats this season, tied with Brad Snyder (2006) for second on the single-season list, and his 10 triples are the third-most in single-season history. Furthermore, Rodriguez has drawn 76 walks to pass Todd Betts (1997) for fourth on the single-season list.

Roster Move...The Aeros received C Carlos Santana from Kinston today, and sent C Damaso Espino to Mahoning Valley. Santana was acquired from the Dodgers in the Casey Blake trade and was named California League MVP.
