March 7, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO ââ There's 15 games and counting for the San Diego Gulls, who are now (as of Monday) seven points out of a playoff spot in the West Division. The bright side for the Blue and Orange is that nine of those 15 remaining games are at home, where they've excelled this season.
San Diego began the week with a loss in Bakersfield and suffered another setback Friday in Fresno. The Gulls, however, pulled out a must-win Saturday back home against the Falcons. Now they get set for another three-game week in Long Beach, Las Vegas and home against Alaska.
WEEK IN REVIEW:
March 2 @ Bakersfield: The Condors dominated the Gulls out-shooting them 45-25 and outscoring them 4-1. Bakersfield opened up an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals by former Gulls Ashlee Langdone and Mathieu Brunelle. Dennis Shiryaev made it 3-0 early in the second and Ryan Gills gave the Condors a four-goal lead midway through the third. San Diego was six seconds away from being shutout, but newcomer Joel Stepp notched his first goal in a Gulls uniform.
March 4 @ Fresno: The Gulls held a 2-0 lead midway through the game, but the Falcons scored five unanswered goals and cruised to a 5-2 victory. Scott Borders and Sean O'Connor gave San Diego its two-goal cushion, but that quickly got wiped out when Fresno scored twice in a 1:05 span late in the second period. The Falcons netted three more in the third period, while goaltender Brett Jaeger was his usual stingy self in net. Six different Falcons finished with multipoint games: Matt O'Dette (1g, 1a), Derek Krestanovich (1g, 1a), David Brisson (1g, 1a), Terry Marchant (1g, 1a), Shaun Sutter (2a) and Jason Weaver (2a). San Diego netminder Mathieu Chouinard made 30 saves in a losing effort.
March 5 vs. Fresno: Facing a must-win situation, the Gulls did just that, blanking the Falcons 4-0 at the Sports Arena. Netminder Eddy Ferhi stopped all 31 shots and O'Connor, Jonathon Shockey and Grady Moore each had multipoint games. San Diego put up a two-spot in the opening period and netted two more in the second. The Falcons found their offensive spark in the third period, but Ferhi continued his stingy play in net.
PLAYER NOTES: O'Connor has three goals and five points in his last four games... Moore has four assists in his last three games... Ferhi's shutout Saturday was the first of his professional career... Chris Lynch and Nick Ganga, both suffering from knee injuries, were placed on the injured list... Evgueni Nourislamov (broken thumb) and Mike Garrow (concussion) remain on injured reserve... Andrew Canzanello and Joel Stepp were both assigned by the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks...
TEAM NOTES: The Gulls are 19-5-3 at home, but just 10-17-3 on the road... San Diego is 22-3-1 when scoring four-plus goals in a game, but just 7-19-5 when scoring three or less... The Gulls have only out-shot their opponent three times since the all-star break (20 games)... They are 8-11-2 in their last 21 games... San Diego finished the regular season a combined 0-8-0 in Bakersfield and Fresno... Since the all-star break the Gulls are 5-1-1 at home and 3-9-1 on the road...
UPCOMING GAMES: San Diego goes back on the road for a brief two-game trip before opening a five-game homestand. The Gulls will in Long Beach Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Las Vegas Saturday, March 12 at 7:05 p.m. They return home Sunday, March 13 to face the red-hot Alaska Aces. Game time is set for 5:05 p.m. and it will be Education and Kids Night, featuring "Skate with the Gulls" immediately following the contest.
