St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints had trouble figuring out the plethora of bullpen arms the Omaha Storm Chasers threw at them on Sunday evening. The Saints managed just four hits, although two of them came on back-to-back home runs, in a 4-2 loss at CHS Field in front of 7,549.
The Saints used the long ball to get on the board in the second inning. John Andreoli led off the inning with a solo homer to left-center, his 10th with the Saints and 12th of the season, making it 1-0. The very next batter, Braden Bishop, drilled a solo homer to left, his fourth of the season, giving the Saints a 2-0 lead. Those, however, would be their lone runs and their last hits until a leadoff single by Andreoli in the seventh and a two out double by Cole Sturgeon in the eighth.
Meanwhile, Josh Winder got the start for the Saints and was perfect through three innings. The Storm Chasers broke up the perfect game bid in the fourth as Maikel Garcia led off with an infield single to short. He stole second and scored on a fielding error by Andrew Bechtold at second. Winder went 4.0 innings allowing one unearned run on one hit while striking out three.
Randy Dobnak made his third Major League rehab appearance for the Saints. He retired six of the seven batters he faced. The lone batter to reach came in the fifth, on a solo homer from Gabriel Cancel, his fourth of the season, tying the game at two. Dobnak went 2.0 innings allowing one run on one hit and striking out one.
From there, it was Cole Sands on Major League rehab. After a scoreless seventh, the Storm Chasers grabbed their first lead of the game in the eighth. Iván Castillo led off the inning with a double to left, he was sacrificed to third, and scored on a ground out by Major League rehabber Vinnie Pasquantino, making it 3-2.
The Storm Chasers added an insurance run in the ninth when Logan Porter singled with one out. He moved to second on a ground out and scored on a single off the right field wall by Cancel increasing the lead to 4-2. Sands went 2.2 innings allowing two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out two.
The Saints have Monday off and are back in action on Tuesday at Fifth Third Field against the Toledo Mud Hens. The two teams will resume their game from July 17 that is in the top of the first inning with the Mud Hens up 1-0 and two outs. The Saints will be the home team for the resumed game as the game was played at CHS Field. The game will begin at 4:05 p.m. (CT). RHP Louie Varland (1-1, 1.69) will begin the game for the Saints and the Mud Hens are TBA. The game is scheduled for nine innings. The regularly scheduled game will begin approximately 30 minutes at the conclusion of the resumed game and will be a scheduled seven inning game. The Saints will start RHP Ariel Jurado (0-2, 5.03) and the Mud Hens are TBA. Both games can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
