Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - In the first of 12 meetings between the two teams this season, Cleveland's Lake Erie Monsters defeated the Grand Rapids Griffins in a shootout on Friday at The Q by a final score of 3-2. With the win, the Monsters improved to 7-3-0-2 overall this season and with a .667 points percentage, pulled into a tie for 2nd place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
After a fast-paced first period slid by mostly scoreless, rookie Monsters defenseman Dillon Heatherington sent a seeing-eye wrist shot past Grand Rapids goaltender Jared Coreau at 18:04 of the frame for his first goal of the season, an unassisted, even-strength marker that made it 1-0 Lake Erie heading into the middle stanza.
In the second, the Monsters picked up right where they left off, as Alex Broadhurst tapped home his second marker of the season at 1:52 to make it 2-0 Lake Erie, thanks to a strong, even-strength net-front drive from Josh Anderson and a secondary assist from Kerby Rychel. Grand Rapids punched back at 4:58 however, as Nick Jensen snuck his first goal of the season past Lake Erie backstop Anton Forsberg to pull the Griffins within a goal heading into the third.
Grand Rapids continued their ascent early in the final period as Anthony Mantha redirected a Ryan Sproul point shot at 3:19 to tie the game at two apiece, a score that held up through the end of regulation and a three-on-three overtime period. After three Forsberg shootout saves and failed coversions from Lake Erie's Sonny Milano and T.J. Tynan, Rychel, the Monsters' leading scorer, converted in the bottom of the third round to lift the Monsters to a 3-2 victory.
Forsberg improved to 5-2-0 this season by virtue of a 21-save performance while Coreau took the loss for the Griffins despite making 32 saves in regulation and overtime and two in the shootout.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Saturday rematch with the Griffins with live coverage from The Q underway at 7:00 pm on 99X and the Monsters Hockey Network.
