Amerks Winning Streaks Ends in 7-1 Loss to Phantoms
November 13, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
(Allentown, PA)... The Rochester Americans made their first-ever visit to Allentown on Friday night in the midst of a three-game winning streak only to have their bid for a fourth straight win denied in a 7-1 loss to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms at the PPL Center. With the loss, the Amerks fall to 6-6-0-0 on the young season heading into the final two games of their three-game weekend swing through the Keystone State.
Colby Robak scored on the power-play for the second straight game and Nathan Lieuwen made 28 saves in the loss, which snapped a personal three-game win streak for the third-year netminder.
Nick Cousins led Lehigh Valley with a season-high four-point night (1+3) and Danick Martel chipped in three points (2+1) behind a 30-save effort from Anthony Stolarz. Chris Conner (1+1), Peter Straka (1+1) and Shayne Gostisbehere (0+2) also finished with multiple points while Taylor Leier and former Amerk Kevin Sundher each tallied goals in the win for the Phantoms.
Lehigh Valley led 1-0 just 3:47 into the opening frame with Conner scoring his fifth of the season off a deflection to give the Phantoms an early advantage they would never relinquish. Martel added to the lead with 6:04 remaining in the first period when he located a loose puck at the top of the crease and swept it past Lieuwen for his first of two goals on the night.
The Phantoms scored three times in the second period to take control of the game, beginning just 1:44 into the middle frame with Sundher scoring his first of the season against his former team.
Robak would answer on the man-advantage less than two minutes later with his second goal in as many games, but Lehigh Valley responded with a power-play goal of its own from Leier before Cousins gave the Phantoms a 5-1 cushion heading into the second intermission.
Martel struck again at 6:32 of the third with his second of the contest, beating Lieuwen on the short side off a 3-on-1 fast break, and Straka sealed the win with just 2:05 remaining in the third on a second-chance back-hander for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Rochester continues its three-game trek through Pennsylvania on Saturday, Nov. 14 when the Amerks travel to Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza to take on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The 7:05 p.m. contest will be the first of just two meetings between the interconference rivals this season and will be broadcast live on FOX Sports 1280 Rochester. Saturday's matchup marks the first in nearly two years for the two teams, who last met twice during the 2013-14 campaign when the Amerks and Penguins split the season series, each winning on the road.
