Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The epitome of a team effort is what it took for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to tie the franchise's all-time, single-season winning streak of nine games. Seven different goal-scorers chipped in and Matt Murray had a 24-save shutout as the Penguins beat the Hershey Bears, 7-0.
Conor Sheary led the 10-1-0-0 Penguins in their victory with a goal and three assists for four points. It was the first four-point outing of Sheary's career.
Kael Mouillierat cashed in early on Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's first power play of the game off of a Sheary pass to the slot, giving his team a 1-0 lead at 4:59 of the first period.
Dominik Simon continued his hot start to his rookie campaign, scoring just 19 seconds into the second period with a patented short-side snipe to make it 2-0 Penguins.
Simon wasn't done there, picking off a pass in the defensive zone and springing Sheary on a break for his second goal of the season. Sheary's tally came at 7:39 and gave Wilkes-Barre/Scranton a 3-0 lead.
A fortuitous bounce off of Bears' defenseman Aaron Ness gave Scott Wilson a power play goal, a 4-0 lead to the Penguins, and another assist to Sheary.
After Wilson's goal, Hershey's head coach, Troy Mann, made the call to replace starter Dan Ellis with Justin Peters.
Peters quickly acclimated to the action making multiple saves on successive Penguins four-on-three and five-on-three man advantages. Despite Peters' performance while his team was down a man, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton finished the night three-for-seven on the power play.
Peters was first solved by Jean-Sébastien Dea, who scored his fourth of the season by ringing a shot off the pipe and in past Peters to make it 5-0 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at 9:45 of the third period. Sheary had the lone assist on Dea's mid-third marker.
The Penguins were also a perfect six-for-six in shorthanded situations and killed two different power plays before they were halfway over by drawing a penalty of their own.
Oskar Sundqvist and Tom K-hnhackl added goals of their own 45 seconds apart in the final two minutes of the game.
Murray's 24 saves gave him his second shutout of the season and 14th of his career.
Carter Rowney saw his goal-scoring streak end at three games, but an assist on Simon's goal extended his point streak to five games.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has little time to enjoy the victory as they take on the Rochester Americans Saturday night in the final tilt of a seven-game home stand for the Penguins. Puck drop between the Pens and Amerks is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
