Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, MA - Dustin Jeffrey collected his fourth three-point night this season to power the Falcons past the Utica Comets by a 6-3 score on Friday night.
The Falcons stormed out to an early lead with a power play tally from Jeffrey, scoring his sixth of the season 5:40 into the first period. Alex Grant and Derek Smith assisted on the goal. The Comets quickly responded with a goal from Nicklas Jensen 32 seconds later. Assists on the goal were credited to Linden Vey and Alex Biega. The Falcons regained their lead with Keith Aulie scoring his first of the season from Tyler Gaudet and Jordan Szwarz. The slap shot goal put the Falcons on top by a 2-1 score. 34 seconds later, Greg Carey extended the lead with wrist shot past Richard Bachman for his fourth of the season. Carey's goal was assisted by Jeffrey and Smith. Eric Selleck finished the period's scoring with a wrist shot goal assisted by Grant and Ross Mauermann to give the Falcons a 4-1 lead.
The second period featured several power play opportunities for both teams but neither team could convert with the man advantage. Jeffrey sniped a shot over the glove of Bachman for his second of the night and seventh of the season. The goal was scored with under three minutes left and assisted by Craig Cunningham after forcing a turnover. The Falcons took a 5-1 lead into the third period.
Ross Mauermann extended the Falcons lead to a 6-1 score with his first professional goal 2:08 into the third period. His goal was assisted by Selleck. Utica came firing back with two goals in the early stages of the third period. Carter Bancks scored 43 seconds after Mauermann's goal to give the Comets momentum. Utica applied several chances and tallied another goal by Hunter Shinkaruk on the power play. The goal completed the scoring despite the Comets adding 15 shots in the period. Louis Domingue held the score to a 6-3 Falcons win by stopping 27 shots in his fourth consecutive win. Backman lost his first appearance this season with Utica.
The Falcons travel to Binghamton to face the Senators tomorrow at 7 p.m. The weekend set of games concludes on Sunday against the Albany Devils at the MassMutual Center.
