Royals Win Defensive Battle in Wheeling

On Friday night in Wheeling, the Nailers battled the Reading Royals for the second time in three days. For the second straight game, the visiting team got the upper hand, as Stanislav Galiev broke a 1-1 tie with 14:28 left in regulation, as Reading picked up the 2-1 victory.

The Nailers had a strong first period, controlling the puck, and getting shots on net, but Drew MacIntyre was perfect on 12 shots. His teammates gave him support with 3:01 remaining, when Adam Comrie's shot snuck through Scott Darling, allowing Nikita Kashirsky to tip in a loose puck in the crease.

In the second period, Wheeling drew even, courtesy of Zack Torquato's third goal of the season. Scott Zurevinski snapped a shot on goal from the left circle that MacIntyre denied, but Torquato was there to put back the rebound. Tim Corcoran also notched an assist on the marker for his first professional point.

With the score tied at one in the third, the Royals retook the lead. Stanislav Galiev took a feed from Joe Sova in the slot, and deposited a wrist shot into the top part of the net, giving Reading a 2-1 advantage. The Royals' defense limited the Nailers to just four shots in the third period, as they hung on for the win.

Drew MacIntyre got the win for Reading, making 24 saves on 25 shots. Scott Darling was saddled with the loss, despite stopping 32 of the 34 shots he faced.

The Nailers will travel to Kalamazoo for a 7:30 game on Saturday, before returning home on Thursday, when they will face the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:00.
