Elmira Jackals News Release
TOLEDO, Ohio - The Elmira Jackals were unable to win their third consecutive game as they fell to the Toledo Walleye by a 4-1 score Friday night at the Huntington Center. The loss dropped Elmira's record to 22-18-4 on the season.
The first period featured a lot of ebb and flow as the Jackals and Walleye combined for 17 shots on goal. Toledo had the slight advantage at 9-8, but goaltenders Maxime Clermont and Kent Simpson kept all of the pucks out of their nets. Simpson shut out the opponent for the fourth consecutive period after posting his first professional shutout the previous night in Cincinnati. Clermont, who made 37 saves to help Elmira's cause in an 8-1 win over Trenton last Sunday, was particularly sharp when Toledo worked on its two power plays in the first. Elmira earned a power play with a little less than a minute remaining in the period, but could not capitalize on the chopped up ice.
When the second began Elmira still had 1:09 of power play time to work with. Despite a pair of shots the Jackals could not produce the first goal of the game. That proved to be costly as Toledo's attack found traction near the midpoint of the stanza and left Elmira trailing by three heading into the third. Defenseman Wes O'Neill opened the scoring seven minutes into the period with his 11th of the season scored off of the rush. Byron Froese potted a power play goal at 16:38 and was followed 27 seconds later by Pat Knowlton tipping in a point shot by Phil Oreskovic. The Jackals could not respond to Toledo's late flurry and headed into the third down by three.
A furious comeback attempt by the Jackals was turned away at most every corner by Simpson in the third period. The Jackals launched 15 shots his way but only Louie Caporusso's backhander with 1:29 to play beat him. The goal was Caporusso's fifth in his last three games and moved him into the team lead with 17. Jean Bourbeau collected the lone assist. Andrew Rowe was held off of the score sheet for the first time since December 22 as he had his 10-game point streak snapped. Joey Martin added an empty netter in the final minute to set the final.
Clermont ended the night stopping 25 of 28 in taking the loss. The Jackals were 0-for-2 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
Mark your calendars! The Jackals are back on First Arena ice on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 to take on the Reading Royals at 7:05 p.m. The Jackals will be holding a post-game autograph session with select players and hosting Willowcreek Wednesday.
