Reign Set Team Record in 5-2 Win over Bulls
February 1, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Ontario Reign News Release
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign (31-10-1-2), defending Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings, set a team record with their 8th consecutive win with a 5-2 victory over the San Francisco Bulls (17-22-1-5) at Cow Palace Thursday night before a crowd of 2,674.
The Reign's first goal of the game was also a first for Matt Clune, as the rookie defenseman netted his first professional marker. Kyle Kraemer's wrist shot from the top of the left circle rebounded directly to Clune in the slot and he buried a snap shot into the back of the net at 7:34. Just 22 seconds later, CJ Stretch finished off a 3-on-1 for his 23rd goal of the season. Bulls defenseman Scott Langdon had his shot knocked out to center ice where it was collected by Kraemer to begin the rush. Kraemer worked the puck to Everett Sheen who advanced it to Stretch and he whipped it just inside the far post to give the Reign a 2-0 lead.
Another Reign rookie got on the board as Mario Lamoureux extended the lead to 3-0 with a shorthanded goal at 14:45 of the second frame. Lamoureux stole the puck at center ice and raced toward the San Francisco net all alone. He made a couple of moves then tucked the puck under Taylor Nelson with a nifty little backhander. The marker propelled Lamoureux into a tie for the league lead for points by a rookie with 40 (19g, 21a).
The Bulls cut the Reign lead to 3-2 in the third period with goals by Dean Ouellet at 12:11 and Peter Sivak at 17:15, but Stretch put Ontario up 4-2 with a top-shelf wrister before Kraemer put the game away with an empty-net goal.
Reign netminder JF Berube continued his stellar play between the pipes, stopping 28 of 30 shots on the way to his fifteenth win of the season and fifth win in a row. The Kings prospect has held opponents to two or fewer goals in 14 contests this season and is 3rd in the league with a 2.17 goals-against average. Nelson made 24 saves in the loss.
