Royals Western Swing Goes Perfect

Las Vegas, NV - The Reading Royals (20-6-2=42) established a team record by winning the team's eighth consecutive road game and became the first team to defeat the Las Vegas Wranglers in regulation on their home ice by winning at the Orleans Arena, 3-2. Reading made the most of the team's power play chances going 2 for 3 with the man advantage and got excellent goaltending from all-star Cody Rudkowsky to win the team's 20th game and jump into a tie with the Wheeling Nailers for the top slot in the North Division.

Las Vegas scored first when Matt Dzieduszycki, while planted at the top of the crease, redirected a feed off the right wing half-wall by Dan Tudin behind Rudkowsky 6:20 into the first period. The Royals tied things at one in the waning moments of the first period, while they were on the power play for the second time of the night. Mike Kompon dug the puck out of the right wing corner and found Chris Bala on the right wing wall. Bala stick-handled and held long enough to allow defenseman T.J. Kemp slide on the backdoor in the left circle. Bala fed the puck cross ice to Kemp, who moved low in the circle and feigned a shot drawing the attention of the defense and goaltender, Mike McKenna. Kemp then slid the puck to the top of the crease where Doug Christiansen was able to redirect the puck behind McKenna with just 44 seconds left in the first period.

In the second, with the teams playing four aside, the Royals took a 2-1 lead when Dany Roussin intercepted a clearing attempt by the Wranglers and walked in on McKenna all alone. Roussin did not waste the chance, beating the Wranglers' goaltender high to the glove side 3:46 into the period. Reading took a 3-1 lead on the team's third power play opportunity of the night, when Kompon was able to bank a puck from behind the goal-line off a Wranglers' player and into the Las Vegas net at the 12:40 mark of the second. But 58 seconds later, the Wranglers made it a one goal game again when forward Shawn Limpright sprung Chris Stanley on a break, and Stanley beat Rudkowsky high to the stick side. In the third, the Wranglers turned up the heat, but the Royals and Rudkowsky were able to hold Las Vegas off the board and preserve the win.

The Royals head back east for a Friday night match-up with the Johnstown Chiefs (7:30 pm). The season long seven game road trip for Reading concludes on Saturday night in Trenton, when the Royals take on the Titans at 7:00 pm. The Royals then return home on Tuesday, January 10, against the Wheeling Nailers in a game sponsored by the Pennsylvania Lottery.
