Weiman Named Runner-Up For Goalie Of The Week Honors

SAN DIEGO - Tyler Weiman has been named a runner-up for ECHL Reebok Hockey Goalie of the Week honors, the ECHL announced Wednesday. This marks the second time in the last three weeks that the netminder has earned runner-up honors.

Weiman appeared in one game for the Gulls last week, stopping 36 shots in San Diego's 5-1 win against the Steelheads on New Year's Eve. Of his 36 saves, 20 came in the second period. He also won his American Hockey League debut with the Lowell Lock Monsters last week (Dec. 28), turning aside 26 shots.

The 5-foot-11-inch, 180-pounder from Lloydminster, Alberta is now 6-8-2 overall with a 2.97 goals-against average and .901 save percentage. After getting off to a 1-6-1 start, Weiman is 5-2-1 since with a 2.23 GAA and .924 save percentage.

The Colorado Avalanche, San Diego's NHL affiliate, originally assigned Weiman to the Gulls in early October. He spent portions of training camp with both Colorado and Lowell.

The 21-year-old goaltender spent last season (his rookie year) with the Central Hockey League's Colorado Eagles, posting a 33-6-5 record with a 1.80 goals-against average and .938 save percentage. He led the CHL in wins, GAA, save percentage and shutouts (eight), while being named the league's Outstanding Goaltender and Rookie of the Year. Weiman was Colorado's fifth round pick in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
