Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League and the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has signed forward Jason Weitzel ("WHITE zehl"). A twenty-six year old center who hails from Balgonie, Saskatchewan, Weitzel recently completed his third season at the University of Regina, where he led all skaters in Canada West (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) with twenty-one goals in twenty-seven games. Weitzel also assisted on fourteen goals and picked up 90 penalty minutes for the Cougars this season. As a result of his performance over the past season, Weitzel earned a selection as a Canada West Second Team All-Star. Over the course of a 144 game five year university career, which included his first two seasons at Acadia University, Weitzel scored a total of fifty-nine goals, assisted on sixty-six others (for a total 125 points), and was assessed with 299 penalty minutes. Prior to jumping to Canadian university hockey, Weitzel played four seasons with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League.

In a separate series of transactions also undertaken today, the Royals placed forward Charlie Kronschnabel on the three-day injured reserve; placed forward Ned Lukacevic on the seven-day injured reserve; placed goaltender Curtis Darling on the thirty-day injured reserve; and released defenseman Sheldon Wing.

The Royals travel tonight to the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, New Jersey, where the Royals will take on the Trenton Titans (7:00 pm). Thursday night's game will be on tape delay on ESPN Radio due to a scheduling conflict with the Reading Phillies' home opener; but can be heard live on the internet through the Royals' website, www.royalshockey.com, beginning thirty minutes before the opening face-off. Live streaming video is also available for $6.00 per game through the B2 Networks, which can be accessed through the Royals' website.
