TRENTON, NJ (April 5, 2007) - The Reading Royals jumped out to a three-goal lead and Yutaka Fukufuji recorded his first shutout of the season, stopping 28 shots to defeat the Trenton Titans, 5-0, on Thursday night at the Sovereign Bank Arena.
The Royals were able to score a goal every which way in the opening frame in taking a 3-0 cushion into the first intermission. Kevin Saurette notched the game's first goal at 5:19 of the first when he sidestepped a defensemen and beat Gregg Naumenko to the blocker side with a low wrist shot. The Royals went up by two at 11:23 on a shorthanded goal by Shawn Collymore, who was the benefactor of a Greg Hogeboom break and centering pass to the far post. Bryan Schmidt completed the trifecta with a power play with 4:46 left until the break.
After a scoreless second period, Reading opened up the final frame with another goal on a man-advantage as Eric Werner's wrist shot from the blueline beat a screened Naumenko 2:50 into the period. Dany Roussin helped the Royals add insult to injury using a late power play to light the lamp and complete the scoring with 2:17 remaining.
With the shutout loss, the Titans' four-game winning streak comes to an end, as does Benoit Mondou's twelve-game point streak (10g, 11a).
Trenton went scoreless on six power play chances and was 7-for-10 on the penalty kill.
