The Royals went up by two at 11:23 on a shorthanded goal by Shawn Collymore, who was the benefactor of a Greg Hogeboom break and centering pass to the far post. Bryan Schmidt completed the trifecta with a power play with 4:46 left until the break.

After a scoreless second period, Reading opened up the final frame with another goal on a man-advantage as Eric Werner's wrist shot from the blueline beat a screened Naumenko 2:50 into the period.
