Sacramento River Cats News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Starter A.J. Griffin hurled a quality start for the River Cats Thursday, but a two-out, three-RBI double by Matt Kata in the sixth inning proved to be the difference, as Round Rock dropped Sacramento in the series finale, 5-3.
Griffin surrendered five runs-just two of which were earned-while striking out three and walking just one batter. From the end of the first until the sixth inning, Griffin retired 13-straight Round Rock hitters, but was done in by Kata's sixth-inning double. Pedro Figueroa kept it close out of the River Cats bullpen, tossing a pair of shutout innings, but the River Cats could not score against three Express relievers.
Griffin (0-2) took the loss, while Figueroa tossed his eighth- and ninth-consecutive scoreless Triple-A innings to begin the 2012 campaign. Figueroa has given up just four hits and no runs so far with Sacramento this season.
Neil Ramirez improved to 5-4 for Round Rock after throwing a quality start Thursday evening, holding the River Cats to three earned runs in six innings, striking out six and walking four. Tanner Scheppers closed the door to earn his seventh save.
Eric Sogard went 2-for-4 for the second-straight night, maintaining his .500 average after his second game with Sacramento. Jermaine Mitchell hit a solo home run in the second inning, his second of the season.
The River Cats return home on Friday, May 25, for an eight-game homestand against the Reno Aces and Fresno Grizzlies, with Manny Ramirez expected to make his Raley Field debut in the series opener Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., and will feature a pitching matchup of Cats RHP Travis Banwart (3-2, 5.59 ERA) and Reno righty Charles Brewer (1-4, 7.20 ERA). Friday's game is a Toyota Family Value Friday, with $1 hot dogs and desserts for all fans.
Friday's game can also be seen on MoreTV, KCRA's digital channel 3.2. Johnny Doskow will call all the action, via a simulcast with the River Cats flagship radio station, Talk 650 KSTE.
