Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

In their second doubleheader of the 2012 season, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (24-23) lost the season series with the Oklahoma City Redhawks (27-20) with a 7-4 loss in the opening game but managed to split the twin bill by putting up nine runs, seven scoring with two outs, in a 9-2 win to stay above .500 on the season.

Colorado Springs outfielder Andrew Brown led the way for the Sky Sox in the doubleheader by going 3-for-7 with 5 RBI and three runs scored in the two games, including a two-run shot in the first game that tied him with utility player Matt McBride for the team lead at four home runs this season. Brown accounted for seven of the Sky Sox fourteen runs in the two games and has totaled 26 RBI this month, which leads all of Triple-A. His two-RBI double in the second game of the doubleheader also moved him in to second in all of Triple-A this month with 11 doubles in May and fourth in extra-base hits at 15.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Sky Sox left-hander Drew Pomeranz (2-1, 1.23 ERA) lost his first game for a Rockies Minor League affiliate in seven career starts by allowing six runs, four unearned, in his three innings of work. Pomeranz scoreless streak for Rockies Minor League affiliates was broken at 26 innings on a one-out RBI single by Redhawks first baseman Mike Hessman in the first inning, and he allowed a three-run home run in the second inning to Oklahoma City left-fielder Justin Ruggiano after the inning was prolonged by a two-out throwing error. Despite being saddled with the loss, Pomeranz has only allowed two earned runs in 14.2 innings of work for the Sky Sox this season.

Sky Sox right-hander Guillermo Moscoso (3-3, 4.87 ERA) shut down the Redhawks offense in the late game, allowing only one earned run in his six innings of work. Moscoso has allowed only seven earned runs in 25 innings since he was sent back to the Sky Sox from the Rockies on May 6th, and has totaled 20 strikeouts in those four starts.

All eight position player starters notched a hit and either batted in or scored a run in the second game win, with five Colorado Springs batters posting a multi-hit game. The win in the final game of the series with the Redhawks avoided their first time being swept this season and evened the Sky Sox record at 4-4 in their third homestand of the season.

Colorado Springs will now begin an eight-game roadtrip facing two division leaders, first facing off with the best team in the PCL in the Fresno Grizzlies (32-15) then ending the trip against the Pacific Northern Division leading Salt Lake Bees (25-23). In the first game of the series with Fresno, the Sox will send out right-hander Carlos Torres (2-1, 2.70 ERA) against Grizzlies righty Shawn Sanford (NR), who will be making his first career start above Advanced Single-A, at 8:05 p.m. MT.
