Tacoma Rainiers News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa-- Brian Sweeney's strong start steered the Tacoma Rainiers to a 7-2 win over the Iowa Cubs at Principal Park on Thursday.
The right-hander Sweeney, in his first appearance since suffering a concussion at Reno on May 5, allowed just three hits, no walks and struck out two over 6.0 innings, helping the Rainiers to a series win over the Cubs.
Outfielder Carlos Peguero accounted for the first run in the contest with a two-out solo home run in the first inning. Peguero hit four home runs and produced eight RBI over the Rainiers four-game series at Iowa.
Outfielder Trayvon Robinson expanded Tacoma's edge to 2-0 with a sacrifice fly in the second inning, and Mike Wilson stretched the lead to four runs after hitting a two-run double with one out in the third.
Luis Rodriguez drove in the Rainiers fifth run with an RBI-single in the sixth inning. Rodriguez went 2-for-4 in the contest to extend his team-best hitting streak to 19 games, the infielder's longest since his 2004 season with Triple-A Rochester.
Tacoma combined to collect 12 hits on Thursday, with Wilson's three hits and three RBI leading the lineup. Rodriguez and shortstop Carlos Triunfel recorded the team's other multi-hit efforts with two hits each.
The Rainiers (20-27) return to Cheney Stadium tomorrow, May 25, to open a Memorial Day weekend homestand against the Tucson Padres (17-29). The weekend begins with Friday Night Fireworks, then continues with the Little Caesars Family Deal on Saturday and a Sunday Bruch at the Ballpark. The Rainiers are also offering a Memorial Day Party Deck Special throughout the four-game homestand, offering fans the opportunity to enjoy a special holiday buffet at a private Party Deck table during each game.
Left-hander Anthony Vasquez (5-2, 4.44) is set to start the series opener for Tacoma against Padres left-hander Tom Layne (0-2, 4.50). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Friday, with fireworks held immediately following the conclusion of the game.
