Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The Albuquerque Isotopes (27-21) were no match for a Fresno Grizzlies offensive onslaught, falling 12-5 on Thursday night at Isotopes Park. The loss, the team's fourth in six games, drops the 'Topes a half game behind Oklahoma City in the PCL American Southern Division
Fresno was all over the Isotopes from the very beginning, getting on the board first with a two-run home run from Eli Whiteside in the third inning that gave the Grizzlies a quick 2-0 advantage.
The visiting team continued pouring it on with a six-run fifth, beginning with back-to-back walks followed by a single from Whiteside and a two-run single from Hacker that made the score 4-0, Fresno. Following a 'Topes pitching change, Nick Noonan and Francisco Peguero both lifted sac-flies to right, plating two more runs and extending the lead 6-0. Roger Kieshnick then continued his hot streak against the Isotopes, smacking an RBI single and scoring two batters later on an RBI single, capping off the Fresno assault at 8-0.
The Grizzlies score twice more in the sixth and two more times in the seventh to grab a commanding 12-0 lead before Albuquerque finally showed signs of life as Tim Federowicz belted a solo homer in the seventh, putting the 'Topes on the board 12-1.
Despite the large deficit, the Isotopes would not give up, scoring four times in the eighth in an attempt to make the game respectable. With runners on first and second and no out, Luis Cruz poked a single to right that loaded the bases for Federowicz, who was plunked by Fresno reliever Wilmin Rodriguez, cutting the lead to 12-2. Brian Cavazos-Galvez then bounced a roller to short that was booted by Skyler Stromsmoe, allowing two more runs to score and trim the advantage to 12-4 Fresno. Joe Becker then capped the rally with an RBI double, pulling the Isotopes to within 12-5.
With a seven-run lead in the ninth, the Grizzlies retired three of four Isotopes batters to coast to a 12-5 victory.
The 'Topes begin their third and final series of the homestand tomorrow against first place Oklahoma City. Isotopes right-hander Stephen Fife (3-3, 5.32) will battle the division rival's righty Mark Storey (1-2, 5.40) in the opening game of the four-game set.
The Isotopes 12-game homestand rolls on, and on top of a tin lunch box giveaway tomorrow, now features an unforgettable Memorial Day Weekend as Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Matt Kemp and outfielder Juan Rivera are both scheduled to appear this Sunday, May 27 and Monday, May 28 as part of Major League Rehabilitation Assignments. The series also includes back-to-back fireworks shows. Tickets for any Isotopes game may be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or on-line at www.abqisotopes.com or www.ticketmaster.com.
