Rookies Lead Way as Penguins Drop Senators

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Rookies led the way for the visitors on Saturday night, as first year pros scored four times to help the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a 6-4 win over the Binghamton Senators at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.

The win was the second in a row for the Penguins (7-5-1-0, 15 points), who are now tied for the top spot in the East Division with the Hershey Bears. The Sens (4-7-2-0, 10 points) fell for the third time in the past four contests.

Bryan Rust continued to wield the hot stick for the Pens, scoring twice to lead the attack for Wilkes-Barre. His tip in goal off of a Derrick Pouliot shot during a first period power play opened the scoring for the Penguins, and his tally off of a Binghamton giveaway in front of their own net at 5:27 into the second period gave the road club a lead they would never relinquish.

The Pens scored two more times in the second frame to, with Josh Archibald picking up his first of the season with a deflection off of a Brian Dumoulin shot at 8:58, then springing Conor Sheary for a breakaway opportunity that Sheary roofed with a backhander over Andrew Hammond at 10:10.

Chris Wideman, who leads all AHL defensemen in goal scoring, netted his eighth of the season with Reid McNeill serving a roughing penalty, and Matt Puempel pulled the Sens back within one goal at 17:41 of the second period. Puempel's first of the night was Binghamton's third power play goal in as many opportunities.

The score remained 4-3 until Jayson Megna won a defensive zone faceoff that Andrew Ebbett finished off for his third of the season at 11:21. Carter Rowney followed six minutes later, beating Hammond with a low shot blocker side to make it a 6-3 advantage.

Puempel completed the scoring with 18 seconds left in regulation and the Sens skating six on three with Hammond pulled for an extra attacker and two Pens players in the penalty box.

Matt Murray picked up his fourth win of the season with a 30 save performance for the Pens, while Hammond suffered his seventh defeat while making 23 stops.

The Penguins finish up their three-in-three weekend at home on Sunday with a 4:05pm faceoff against the Syracuse Crunch.
