Second Period Flurry Sinks Sens

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Despite a four-point night from defenseman Chris Wideman, the B-Sens fell 6-4 on home ice to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The Penguins used three unanswered second period goals to break open a 1-1 game and held on for their second win over Binghamton this season.

Bryan Rust scored his first of two goals on the power play 12:21 into the first to give the Penguins the 1-0 lead. Patrick Mullen responded with a power-play tally just shy of the 15 minute mark off assists from Chris Wideman and Matt Puempel sending the teams to the intermission knotted at one.

Rust doubled Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's lead 5:27 into the second. A shot from the high point from Reid McNeill bounced around in front of Binghamton's Andrew Hammond and Rust lifted the puck into the net. Penguins goals from Josh Archibald at 8:58 and Connor Sheary at 10:10 made it 4-1 just past the midway point of the second.

The B-Sens power play unit responded with a pair of goals, the first from Wideman at 11:54 and the second from Puempel at 17:41 to shrink the deficit to 4-3 heading into the final intermission.

Despite outshooting the Penguins 18-7 over the final 20 minutes of play, Wilkes-Barre managed to tack on two more goals in the final frame of regulation. Andrew Ebbett made it 5-3 11:21 into the third before Carter Rowney notched his first of the year at 17:43 to make it 6-3. Puempel tallied his second goal of the night on the power play with 18 seconds remaining, moving the final score to 6-4.

Wideman, less than a week removed from being named both CCM/AHL Player of the Week and Player of the Month for October, contributed on all four of the B-Sens goals while Puempel finished with two goals and an assist.

Hammond stopped 23 of 29 shots faced in his 12th start in net for the B-Sens this year. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's Matt Murray earned the win stopping 30 of 34 shots faced.

Binghamton is on the road next weekend for back-to-back games against the Norfolk Admirals starting Friday, November 14, at 7:30p.m. Saturday's contest will start at 7:15p.m. The B-Sens return to home ice Friday, November 21, when they host the Manchester Monarchs at 7:05p.m. Tickets for November 21 are available by calling the Binghamton Senators Executive Office at (607) 722-7367 or stopping in 9-5:30p.m. Monday through Friday.
