Syracuse Crunch News Release
Syracuse, N.Y. - A four-goal third period by the Crunch (5-4-2-0) turned a 4-1 deficit into a 5-4 victory over the Norfolk Admirals (5-7-0-0) Saturday night at the War Memorial.
At the end of two periods, Syracuse trailed by three and were 20 minutes away from its second consecutive loss to Norfolk, but four goals in 12 minutes turned the tide against the Admirals.
Dalton Smith and Yanni Gourde both scored two third period goals. Smith started the scoring at the 3:51 mark to cut the deficit to two, then Gourde scored his first of the season, 41 seconds later. Smith struck again at the 14:38 mark, and Gourde tallied the game-winner, 45 seconds later.Tanner Richard assisted both Gourde goals, Mike Angelidis, Slater Koekkoek, J.P. Cote, Phillip Paradis and Dylan Blujus each got an assist.
In the second period, Jonathan Marchessault extended his team lead in points (10) Saturday night with a penalty shot goal. The Crunch were down a man and Marchessault forced a turnover at center ice, was hooked heading into the offensive zone, and awarded the shot. The conversion closed the gap to 2-1 midway through the second.
Norfolk responded to Marchessault's goal with two more of its own. Louis Leblanc netted the first at the 15:32 mark, assists from Charles Sarault and Nic Kerdiles. Less than two minutes later, Brad Winchester deflected his fourth goal of the season to give the Admirals a 4-1 lead.
Shea Theodore carried over his success from netting the game-winner Friday, and potted two power-play goals in the first period Saturday night. His first came at the 5:47 mark with assists from Chris Wagner and Sarault. He scored his second 10 minutes later on the offensive faceoff after Luke Witkowski went to the penalty box for tripping.
The Crunch spent 22 minutes in the penalty box in the first period, Norfolk had 18 penalty minutes. Syracuse finished 0-for-3 on the power-play, and the Admirals scored two goals on four attempts with the man-advantage. Kristers Gudlevskis is 4-2 on the season and stopped 23 of 27 shots. Igor Bobkov stopped 28 of 33 shots.
The Crunch travel to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Sunday to face the Penguins for the first time this season. Syracuse and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton were both in the East Division until the Crunch moved to the Northeast Division prior to this season.
